Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-d1000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello!

I have an HP Victus laptop that I use for my schoolwork and I've been having problems where my laptop will randomly freeze up when I have any program open, particularly the web browser and any CAD software. The screen stays frozen for around 5 minutes then returns a BSOD with the stop code DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (see attached image). I've been dealing with this problem for a couple weeks now but when my computer crashed during an online quiz, I figured it was time to get it fixed. I did some research online to see if anyone had similar problems, but none of the provided solutions have fixed my issue.

Thank you in advance!Viewer.png

Hi @SonOfMerlin

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD on your HP Victus laptop can be frustrating, especially with important tasks like schoolwork. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure all your drivers are up to date, especially for graphics, chipset, and network adapters. You can do this through Device Manager:
    • Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
    • Expand the categories, right-click on the devices, and select Update driver.

Check Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your Windows OS is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Power Settings:

  • Adjust your power settings to prevent the laptop from entering low power states:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
    • Choose Change plan settings for your current plan, then Change advanced power settings.
    • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set it to Off.

Disable Fast Startup:

  • Fast Startup can sometimes cause issues. To disable it:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Some applications can conflict with drivers. Try to recall if you installed any new software around the time the problems began and consider uninstalling it.

Run System File Checker:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command:
  • This will check for and repair corrupted system files.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • A clean boot can help determine if background applications are causing the issue:
    • Type msconfig in the search bar and hit Enter.
    • In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
    • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.
    • Restart your laptop and see if the issue persists.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Run hardware diagnostics to check for issues with RAM or other components. HP laptops often have built-in diagnostics you can access by pressing F2 at startup.

Restore or Reset Windows:

  • If all else fails, you might consider restoring your system to an earlier point or performing a reset. Ensure you back up important data first.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
