The bigger the better, but for backup never needs to be bigger than the drive it is backing up.

A backup software is still needed. There are some situations that restore points will not work. As System Restore is stored in corresponding partition, if your hard drive dies, you’ll lose your restore points. Besides, System Restore only backs up critical system files, not your user data such as photos, music, Office files and such. As for me, I like to use AOMEI Backupper as a suppliumental backup and restore software.
