Elite Book 8540w Windows 7 or Windows 10?

Hi,

I have update de S.O. windows 7 to windows 10 pro 64.bit.

I was able to operate all devices except the bluetooth.

Anyone has any idea to make it work?
software drivers etc.

what did you do

1: fresh load of w10

2: upgrade?

why not use the driver off the  HP page, if driver is missing or dead in DM.

the windows10 loads mine autotmatically. via MS PnPlay

or from HP

SP50180.exe  driver) oops works only under w7,  so use the default MS W10, driver. it works.

its and option do you have it?

is it plugged in , inside the LP bottom, see drawing below.

does it show up in Device manager (mine shows, it as a MS driver v10.

if all that is ok. DM says its OK. then.,.

what are you attempting to connect to?  (vast possibles) (cell phone, apple or head phones or what?)

got this? shows up in 4 places.

see? this, if not click , scan for hardware changes in DM. In DM task bar, click icon with screen and magnifying glass.

1. the acid test.  are you readly
2.  it's not in the dm , so there is no driver , so you  cant remove it. and replace it , its not PNP discovered yet.
3. did you click check for  hardware icon on top row of DM (device mananger)
4. it will find it if  its present , plugged i and working.  it will if LP is USA system.
5. if not, its unplugged. (or is alien....)
6. did BT work under windows 7?   ("with win 7 the S.O. view the card?.") is this same answer? what is S.0>?
7. click show hidden devices? yet? in DM menu. try that.
8. but .... sure..... more.....
9. one more problem , is  you did not tell your country, each country uses there own laws on RF transmission. in usa it's the FCC, and our Bluetooth only work here with our hp usa drivers. (matched),  blue tooth hard ware, and this forum you are on is USA only.  see vast  posts here will HP expert say, wrong forum. and shows correct one, (sorry can't help)
10. if you  are not in usa. ,  it may need very special drivers. to work right., same with wifi, and WLAN 3g 4g, etc.
11. im no expert on non USA  laptop hardware, only that they do vary . greatly world wide.
12. Our  lap top uses BROADcom 2070 chip  for wifi.

not all laptops 8540w have same chips and modules and for sure world wide,

why not go to hp.com and do a driver update scan.? you might luck out.

or pull the blue tooth door  off, 1 screw and read the p/n on it.

it  can be traced that way.

one more,,  this device can be disabled in bios. look there, for it. its there. as are all add-in parts..

 my PID for blue tooth is 231D (Broadcom)

Hi Bredzy,

One of my notebooks it is an HP EliteBook 8540w wich I have upgrade to windows 10 in August 2015.

I am satisfied with overall performance, except with one thing.

With Fast Sartup checked my notebook don't shut down or hibernate!!!

So I had to turn off Fast Sartup.

How did you manage this?

Hmmm Fast startup? I've not heard of that option. My laptop shuts down and hybernates as it should. The thing that does not work for me is being able to adjust the brightness using the function keys , also sometimes the start button doesn't respond. Apart from that its been a good upgrade.

again windows 10 is not suppoted on this laptop. RULE 1:

any Success here, is pure hard work,, I did do at least 6 of these lap tops, to w10.

but I don't need nor desire, fast start up, I run a new SSD, (actually 2 inside)

and SSD is fast, so dont need fast startup.   (its mostly for slow HHD, really) HDD is like , Tin Lizzy cars... now..

nor do I use hibenate, 

I do not use any of the extreme HP appls, like encryptons or finger swipe, (i have it working on one just to see if it works and does ) but am smart enough not to risk data, or loss of use, due to rule 1 above,   why do that?

why not just use K.i.S.S  and avoid risk, just run it as a simple laptop,

try to keep in mind , 3 things must match, OS version, laptop model  (exactly) and the managment engines.

 not withstanding all that and facts,  the fingerprint swipe on my 1 LT has worked every day for 1 year.

but on one laptop it was DOA, and guess what the reader really was bad, put a new one in and its works.

if the magic function keys fail that is because. (top bar, led hot buttons (capacitance keys) all work on mine but if not

its the wrong key drive loaded or not loaded at all.

Getting the correct one is tricky , due to RULE #1

  wifi and wired  networks. 100% works,  on mine, and there are more than one WIFI chips used, per sub model.

1: the things below are missing or the wrong version.? will cause keys to go dead.

try to know and understand all hp8540s are not the same.

some have different chips, here and there. finger reader. etc.

all that is hidden in the product codes and serial codes. 

matching all that and windows 10 , will  a COIN toss....  for sure,

if you have lots of time, then load w10 and then fix the DOA bits and pieces, one at time .

Be fully aware some bits will never work, or worse,  like trusting encryption on and illegal load of W10

illegal means not authorized by HP, nor supported, by them.

 lots of hints  here.

be aware if running w7 now, its best to remove all HP software first.  for sure. the old security manager.

and un encrypted any drives,  on system first.

really turn the lap top into a plane jane laptop, then up grade then put on the new HP stack.

as  test (doing it wrong ) id upgrade a fully loaded not encrypted lap top.

and it ran. perfectly

I'm told its was pure luck. (i believe that)

Later testing I did proved this.

try to know what windows 10 is and is not?

it really is not a finished product. (it really is just a marketing tool)

they are NOT just doing simple security updates, from the past ways...

case in point the control panel goes bye bye, a chunk at a time.

so if your OS features fail why ask here, ask MS that?

like fast start up.

if you read the spec, on that , it's a new way of making files that look like OS and APP memory images.

this trick makes the load times short. (smaller files load faster, no magic there)

so if fast start fails read why at MS.com.  read 1000s even 10000 others with same deal and the solutions.

This laptop is just  SATA spec drive, and HP did not design the MS file systems. or OS.

Also read and learn the MS rule for fast start up,  this is the first steps....

next up:

Hibernate is and always will be a tough nut to crack.

think about the vast numbers of chips that do that, its hardware.

Think about out easy it is to cause this to fail..... historically a horror, since day 1 , at MS.

basically the memory just holds the code, in NV ram mode (laptop batter need to work too)

then the chips are commanded to go to standby.  (you can also cherry pick which do and which do not)

in most cases this fails because one driver for one chip is DOA.   (fixing hibernate can be a hard row to hoe)

• or only 1/2 works  ...

    PCs with InstantGo don't have the hibernate option.
    By default, the size of the hidden protected OS "C:\hiberfil.sys" file is 75% of the total amount of RAM installed on your computer.
    If you disable hibernate, fast startup will also get disabled.
    If you disable hibernate, hibernate will no longer show in the Power menu.

as you see, (google it)

the OS saves a hibernate file

this file can be small, and very fast to load, on cold start.

so, if it dont work, its a OS problem

or hibernate has issues, ( has been so for the whole life of windows  OS)

Microsoft has special debug tools to find which parts of hibernate fail, (usually bad drivers) its a tedius process.

but fully documented at MS.
