@Jas25, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The error code 0xc0000185 typically indicates a problem with the boot configuration data (BCD), which can prevent Windows from starting properly. Since you've already run a quick hardware test and passed, the issue is likely software-related.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this:

Try Accessing Recovery Environment Manually

Since you're unable to access the recovery environment automatically, try this:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately start pressing the F11 key repeatedly (once per second).
  3. If successful, this should take you to the HP Recovery Environment.
  4. From there, go to:
    • Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair or Command Prompt.

If F11 doesn’t work, proceed to Step 2.

Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool

If recovery options are inaccessible, you can create a bootable USB recovery drive using another working PC:

  1. Download the HP Cloud Recovery Tool from here:
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support
  2. Follow the instructions to create a recovery USB.
  3. Insert the USB into your affected laptop and boot from it (you may need to press Esc > F9 to select the boot device).
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to repair or reinstall Windows.

Rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD)

If you can access Command Prompt via recovery tools:

  1. Type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
  2. Restart your laptop and check if the issue is resolved.
