Randomly last night my laptop screen froze and was totally unresponsive. I pressed the power off key for 15secs then put it back on. It went into Preparing Automatic Repair but seemed to be stuck like that. I’ve tried powering off & I have hit esc repeatedly and selected F2 and ran the system checks which were all fine. I then read that powering off & switching back on whilst pressing F11 should open up options to restore/recover but all I get is please wait, then after a while it says when encountered an issue and needs to restart and it starts the laptop again and then it goes into Preparing Automatic Update with the circle going round and that’s as far as I get.  F11 key doesn’t give me any menu options. I’m not very technical with things like this so have no other idea what to do or how to try and fix. can anyone help please?

Hi @AngelaR92,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing difficulties trying to access the recovery options on your HP laptop using the F11 key. Here's a general process to follow, which might help you resolve the issue:

Steps for System Recovery Using F11

Check Battery and Power Source: Ensure your laptop is connected to a power source with sufficient charge.

Attempt F11 Recovery Again:

  • Turn off the laptop completely.

  • Disconnect any external devices such as USB drives, printers, or external hard drives.

  • Power on the laptop and immediately start pressing the F11 key repeatedly until you see the system recovery screen.

  • If the F11 option is not working after several attempts, proceed to the next steps.

Access Recovery Partition Manually:

  • If F11 is not initiating system recovery, it could be due to the recovery partition not being detected. You might check if the partition exists.

  • Restart your laptop, press the ESC key repeatedly to access the start-up menu, then select F11 System Recovery.

Use Recovery Media:

  • If F11 doesn't work and the recovery partition is damaged or missing, you'll need recovery media. Recovery media can be created from another computer using the HP Recovery Media Creation tool or ordered from HP Support. Download Windows 11.

Windows Recovery Environment:

  • If you cannot enter the recovery environment through F11, try accessing the Windows Recovery Environment:

  • Power off the laptop and then on again, pressing the ESC key repeatedly.

  • Select F2 Diagnostics and run through the available tests to confirm there are no hardware issues.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
