This usually means your hard drive is failing or has already failed. considering replacing the drive as soon as possible.

reseating the harddrive today, checking online for suitable replacement harddrives.
As I am fixing this for a friend - I have no idea what the Windows license key is for the computer when I change the harddrive. Its not marked on the computer and hope fully i can retrieve some data from the dead harddrive when the SATA to USB adapter arrives in the mail.
Any idea what the default harddrive for
HP Pavilion PC – 15-p182no (ENERGY STAR)?
Anyways, thank you for your replies mate - very much appreciated.

here is the part number for the hard drive currently in the machine. 778188-005
Any Sata 2.5in hard drive will work though.
As for the Windows Key simply install the version of Windows it had on it. If it was upgraded using the free upgrade then install Windows 10 Home and it should auto activate once it gains an internet connection.

New solution is as follows :
Run chkdsk /f command through cmd and target the affected drive
Chkdsk reported bad sectors.
For good measure i ran EaseUS check tool wich does a chkdsk and a surface test.
Restarted my desktop with the affected harddrive still connected and accessed the revived harddrive with all files and folders intact.
Switched the harddrive back to the laptop. Assembled it back : boots up as normal.

While sometimes this works you really should consider replaceing the drive at some point or at least use EasyUS todo backup free to make a image of the drive to restore to a different drive that is not failing.
