Hi @Manuvismaya,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand you're seeing the message: "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly." This message is generated by the system BIOS when it detects that the cooling fan is not operating within its expected range during startup. The cause can be something as simple as restricted airflow from dust buildup or as complex as a failing cooling fan. Running a few checks will help determine whether the issue is related to airflow, firmware, or hardware.

To help us better understand the issue, could you please let us know:

  • What is the exact model or product number of your HP notebook?
  • Do you see an additional error code, such as 90B, 90F, or any other code, along with the message?
  • Did the issue begin after a BIOS update, Windows update, cleaning the notebook, or did it start unexpectedly?
  • Can you hear the cooling fan spinning during startup, or is it completely silent?

Check the air vents

Before performing diagnostics, ensure the notebook has proper airflow, as blocked vents can cause the cooling fan to operate incorrectly.

  • Turn off the notebook and disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Inspect the air intake and exhaust vents for dust, lint, or debris.
  • Carefully clean the vents using compressed air with short bursts.
  • Place the notebook on a hard, flat surface and ensure the vents are not obstructed.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

The hardware diagnostics will verify whether the cooling fan is functioning properly.

  1. Turn the notebook off.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select Component Tests.
  5. Run the Fan Test.
  6. If the test reports a failure, please share the Failure ID displayed on the screen.

Check for BIOS updates

If the fan passes the hardware test, verify that the notebook is running the latest BIOS available for your model.

Use HP Support Assistant or visit the official HP Support website to check for and install any available BIOS updates.

Next Steps

Once you've completed the steps above, please let us know:

  • The result of the Fan Test.
  • Any Failure ID or additional error code displayed.
  • Whether cleaning the vents changed the behavior.
  • Whether you can hear the cooling fan operating during startup.

These results will help determine whether the issue is related to airflow, system firmware, or a hardware fault with the cooling fan, so we can guide you with the most appropriate next steps.

We look forward to your update.

Take care and have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
