My Notebook PC automatically starts updating. It did not complete and displayed fatal error C0000022 applying update operation 138820 of 159704 message.

The operating system is Windows 8.1 but I don't know the bit size.

The only way to clear the displayed message is to turn off the PC by holding down the power button.

In the last month I have also had fatal error message C0000034 a number of times resulting in me having to restore the PC back to factory setting to resolve the problem.

Both errors have only come since I purchased a new HP ENVY 5544 printer. This may be coincidental.

The serial number of my PC is (removed content)

The PC starts diagnosing and gives me a number of options but all end up with the fatal error message.

What needs to be done to get me back a usable PC?

Hello @Andrew987

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome !

Most probably the issue occured because the Windows Update failed to download/install correctly.

It may be due to some 3rd party inteference or just because of faulty/buggy update from Microsoft - happens occasionally.

In order to fix it, first check the basic hardware to rule our hardware issue and then use System Restore.

Perform some basic hardware checks

1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button

2. Power it on.

2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check.

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

4. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Please, perform "System Restore" first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

If/when you manage to boot to Windows desktop, please let me know - we are not ready 🙂

Many thanks for your recommendations to recover. Your suggestions were followed and I now have a working PC.

The checks made on my PC all resulted in passes, so no problem with the hardware.

I hope when I re-install the Microsoft software and link the printer I don't get the fatal error again.

While I now have a working PC I still don't understand fully what caused the fatal error so I hope I don't get it again, but hope the recovery recommended by yourself will help others if they incurr this fatal error.

Many thanks,

Andrew987.

Thank you for your update and for replying back.

Glad that PC boots fine now.

You can clear the Windows Update cache now - here are instructions > https://www.maketecheasier.com/delete-windows-10-update-cache/

As you write initially, the issue appeared because of an update ( I guess Windows update). If you are sure what exactly has tried to update, you can temporary prevent it from installing by using this Microsoft tool > https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-rei...   to avoid the issue from re-appearing again.  Unfortunately, this is Windows 10 and officially you cannot stop it permanently from auto-updating itself whenever it wants
