When trying to boot my HP Split x2 laptop I'm getting a BLUE SCREEN error "Recovery  Your PC needs to be repaired. The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.  File: \BCD  Error Code: 0xc0000034.  I've tried everything that I can think of, but I can't get by this screen.  I have no CD/DVD drive in this model so I can't run any diagnostic tools, even if I had a tools CD/DVD. I'm stuck!  Please help!

1)  Press and hold the Power Button until the "haptic" feedback buzz is made. Immediately after the buzz, start tapping the "ESC" key until "ESC... Pausing Startup" is dispalyed in the lower left corner and/or the "Startup Menu" is displayed.

2a)  Press "F2" to start the "System Diagnostics" options. This may help in determining if there is a hardware issue with your computer. If there is a hardware issue, please contact HP. If there is no hardware issue, proceed to step "2b."

2b)  Repeat step "1" and press "F11" to start the "System Recovery" options.

3)  Choose your keyboard layout.

4)  Under "Choose an option", select "Troubleshoot."

5)  Under "Troubleshoot", select "Advanced options."

6)  Under "Advanced options", select "Automatic Repair."

7)  Choose your "target Operating System" to begin the automatic repair.

😎  If "Automatic Repair" doesn't fix the issue, under "Troubleshoot", you can try "Refresh your PC", "Reset your PC", and "Recovery Manager (System Recovery)"... in that order.

9)  If none of the above solves the problem, you may need to use the USB Recovery Media you previously created to recovery the computer. If you didn't create the required USB Recovery Media, you will need to order the recovery media from HP. Please contact official HP support in your region / country via the HP Worldwide Support Portal to see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer.

I am running Windows 8 on a Acer Aspire XC600 and received the following green screen message after telling me the computer required repairing. "Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information File:\BCD Error Code 0xc0000034" at this point you can leave this page only to go to the Bios Setup Screen. I spoke to Acer Tech guys who say I need to purchase a Recovery CD at the cost of £51.06. Apart from I believe this is a rip off on a computer costing £500 only 14 months ago. Any help please?

Went into a command prompt and ran a few bootrec commands:
Bootrec /fixMBR
bootrec /fixBoot
bootrec /rebuildBCD

This resolved things for me

Thanks for that but I am not able to access a command prompt. I just get a screen telling me the computer needs repairing and then into a bios screen I think?

You need to access the HP support partition on boot. I think its F11 which takes you to the options, one of the advanced options in command prompt

Hello! I can hit escape and get to the startup menu. I checked the hard drive and its good. But then I attempt to hit F11 and it immediately takes me back to original blue screen with Recovery message on it. I attempted F9, F10, and F11. All go straight back to the recovery screen. HP sent me a usb with windows 8 on it because my operating system had somehow disappeared. The first time i put it in, it went through this whole loading process then it wanted to restart to finish. and when it did. i got this pretty blue screen! Help please

This method worked for me, too.  Advanced options, select command prompt, follow the three BOOTrec steps (fixmbr, fixboot, rebuildbcd as stated above), and exit when finished.  When it booted to Win8, the MS Updates window continued to install updates.  That's why it lost the \BCD boot info!

Thanks for these hot tips!

I have had alot of luck with this :

1. Boot into Windows recovery mode and bring up a command prompt

2. c:

3. cd \Boot

4. Dir

5. check file name confirm BCD.Backup.0001

6. rename c:\boot \BCD.Backup.0001 BCD

7. bootrec /rebuildbcd

start normally

I simply cannot thank you enough for this link!

I spent an entire week on the phone with no less than 5 HP customer service specialists to no avail!

They were going to send me a disc to just reset my entire computer to factory.

All I had to do was google this, and within 5 minutes using these three Bootrec prompts, my computer was back up and running with no loss of data!

Thank you to Garnerdj

I am so appreciative!
