Files Corrupted After Bios Update

Please advise me on what actions I need to take so corrupted files do not permanently disable or hamper the operation of my laptop - it's about 1 month out of the box.

After updating the BIOS yesterday on 20 April 2018 as strongly recommended by the HP Support Assistant, I have several corrupt files which sfc /scannow and dism.exe cannot repair. 

Initially, I lost the ability to use the PIN to access the laptop.  After disabling / renabling and multiple restarts, the PIN now works. 

I also used the disk cleanup function to remove unwanted files.

The computer "seems" to work normally but the corrupted files remain.

Hi,

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

I think this may not be related to the BIOS update. If it's only this .wav file (WAV files are Windows Audio and Video files) , I would recommend you leave it still and quiet. Windows 10 1803 (Spring Creators Update) upgrade is coming soon and it may fix quite a lot of things.

If this bothers you, you should perform Repair install of Windows with inplace upgrade - here are detailed instructions >> https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

With regards to the BIOS and for your future reference:

Personally, I do not recommend you update BIOS unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it.

General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong.

Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible.

I was thinking along those lines as well. 

I agree that updating the BIOS is an "iffy" proposition but I was concerned about its ominous "security" warning.

You may uninstall HP Support Assistant program.

While it may be useful in some cases, Windows 10 can update your drivers and provide important updates and driver updates to your PC - you can rely on MS manage the most important stuff and leave aside the least important updates >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

If a BIOS update is mandatory, Windows Updates in Windows 10 will notify you.
