Did the window update , seemed to be successful. I did a few things then closed the lid.  When I opened the lid later in the day, it went to H/P Prepairing Automatic repair only running for 2 seconds and then it keeps repeating.  I have Googled the problem but not sure what to do.  I ran H/P mainframes in the 80s & 90s but my friend left on vacation. @Quilt4fun2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Pavilion Boot Loop Issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It's frustrating to encounter an automatic repair loop on your HP Pavilion, especially after a seemingly successful Windows update. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off your laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect any external devices (USBs, printers, etc.).
  3. Remove the battery (if detachable) and disconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter.
  6. Turn on your laptop.

Step 2: Boot into Safe Mode

  1. Turn off your laptop completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately start pressing F8 repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
  3. Select Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys and press Enter.
  4. If successfully booted into Safe Mode, you can uninstall the recent update that may have caused the loop.

Step 3: Use Startup Repair

  1. Turn off your laptop completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately start pressing F11 repeatedly to open the HP System Recovery.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows attempt to repair the startup issues.

Step 4: Use System Restore

  1. Turn off your laptop completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately start pressing F11 repeatedly to open the HP System Recovery.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your system to a previous point before the update.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
