HP 15dw series laptop has a CMOS error, there's no CMOS battery, if I replace the main battery....
...will if fix the error?
The laptop shows this error, says that it resets it to default and goes dark again prompting me to either restart the computer or try to boot in safe mode (f10, I think)
Any ideas on how to fix a CMOS error if there is no battery for it?

I can get the laptop to say that the CMOS will be reset upon reboot, but once it reboots it just sits there, won't go into bios.
When I try this method
- Turn on the computer by holding the power button down for 20 full seconds then release.
- Press the Power button one more time (if necessary) to start the computer.
- Tap the ESC key about once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash.
- Do steps 7-9 above
I can get as far as ESC...pause startup screen, which remains static (still) with the writing in the lower right corner...it's been sitting there for about 10 minutes now

You seem to have a hardware problem.
Do not attempt to update or flash a new bios until you can pass diagnostics
Check to see if there is a hardware problem.
Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.
If a component fails during the UEFI test then Click here to check warranty
if you cannot run the UEFI diagnostics then used a USB to get the latest UEFI diagnostics.
HP releases newer UEFI diagnostics periodically. When you select F2 during boot you are requesting UEFI diagnostics. There is an updated diagnostics package Click Here Look for the phrase 'issues outside the OS', Expand the '+' symbol and click the DOWNLOAD button. The version of the UEFI diagnostics is shown at the left of that DOWNLOAD button. When you press F2 to run diagnostics please ensure the version is the new one. |
The can be installed or run from a USB flash drive if necessary.
Let me know what you find out.

Recent laptops (internal battery type) do not have CMOS batteries like the older laptops that had detachable batteries.
If your internal battery is dead or cannot hold a charge it needs to be replaced. This can be difficult depending on the model.
Please provide the Product ID or exact model name for better assistance. Preferably the full product ID including the characters after the # symbol. This code may be needed to find cloud recovery files.

What was the warnings that your got when running the drive self test (DST)
all your software is here
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-15-dw1000-laptop-pc-series/model/2100019238?sku=9VV89UAR
There are 7 firmware releases for the disk drive in your laptop. Run the following command to find the correct drive model
Using the windows command prompt, please run the following command and report back what it reveals if you want help.
wmic diskdrive get model, size, mediaType, status |
for example
If you have powershell then run it from the administrators command prompt to get better information:
powershell Get-PhysicalDisk |
if you have a WD drive then do the WD firmware update then re-run the F2 diagnostics
If you have backups you may want to do a factory restore of windows 11
Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.
A bios update is here
note that is is always dangerous to do a bios update. if you system is passing the F2 and the HP support assistant recommends the update then you may be successful updating. Check your warranty before updating
