HP ENVY Laptop 17-ae0xx, product 1FS25AV
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This all started when I sent the notebook in to HP service in Grapevine, TX after the screen developed vertical lines which obscured the whole screen.  The computer was running okay otherwise.  The cooling fan would only ramp up when the system was under load.

When I received the computer back from service, I noticed that the cooling fan ran fast, all the time, regardless of the CPU usage.  Even with 3% CPU usage, the fan would spin at the same fast speed.  I spent about two hours on the phone with tech support, and we tried all sorts of things, including a BIOS reset, but nothing would slow down the fan.   We also tried setting the cooling setting to "Passive" from "Active".  The tech rep said that if the fan were to continue to run fast all the time, the fan would eventually fail, which could cause the processor to over heat and also fail.  He said that I would need to send the notebook BACK in to the service center.

So, I sent it back to the service center and got it back yesterday. The paperwork indicates Replaced Parts:

Heatsink Rangers 1.X

Fan

The paperwork also indicates Repair Actions:

Driver Updated and/or Reloaded

Replaced Parts

Reinstalled Operating System

Performed Extensive Testing

I find it hard to understand how they did not notice that the fan was continuing to run fast all the time, since that was the reason I returned it to them.

Anyway, I today spoke again with Tech Support and Lloyd instructed me install a bunch of updates that were needed after the new operating system installation.  He stated that after all the updates, the fan should slow down.  I installed all updates, but the fan has not slowed down at all.  At this point, I'm beginning to believe that this service center is not capable of dealing with this issue.

If anyone has any understanding of what might be causing the fast fan speed or how to address it, I'm all ears.  Thanks for any help.
