Hi,
I have a HP Envy 17-2002tx, it appears to have a corrupt BIOS (two flashes of the caps lock led, then a pause, then two flashes again).
The steps detailed on this page:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833
Specifically, Step 3 - appears to be incorrect. Running the HP provided executable on another Windows-based system does not ever produce a menu asking to 'Create Recovery USB flash Drive'
I have several questions;
- Is that file really somewhere, and if so where?
- Does anyone here have a 17-2002tx, and if so, do you still have the HP_TOOLS partition? What is the name of the BIOS file for the 17-2002tx on that partition? (I may be able to use a standard Insyde recovery if I knew the filename the system is expecting)
- Or is there a better way to go about recovering the BIOS of a 17-2002tx? The original HP_TOOLS partition does not exist as the computer was upgraded to Solid State drives over a year ago.
Thanks.

Hi
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833
Turn off the notebook.
Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.
With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key and the B key at the same time (WinKey +B).
NB: On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key and the V key (WinKey +V).
While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

If you download SP59487.exe and extract it using 7Zip you get 14 files in a folder.
Ranging from a BIN to a BAK and DLL to EXE etc.
So you should be able to create a USB from there

Hi,
I've actually already tried those exact steps.
I've tried again, just in case - but that does not work. The notebook reads the usb stick for a short while (the usb stick has a light on it, which flashes for about 7-10 seconds), then it goes back to simply blinking the caps lock light twice, then pause, then twice, then pause, etc.
No bios update screen is displayed nor does the laptop beep.

Hi
Au contraire.
You asked some questions and I have given some help.
Is that file really somewhere, and if so where? What file?
SP59487 have you opened it up and seen the 14 files?
It suggests you have not created or used the BIOS flash disk correctly.
Does anyone here have a 17-2002tx, and if so, do you still have the HP_TOOLS partition? What is the name of the BIOS file for the 17-2002tx on that partition? (I may be able to use a standard Insyde recovery if I knew the filename the system is expecting)
You actually do know, it is 0159BF1C.bin, because you have used 7Zip and examined the .exe file.
AND it is for a

MainBoard, so is that your SSID?

I was referring to the file that supposedly creates the USB Recovery Drive, sorry.
I have extracted the file and thrown them onto the USB, the laptop ignores it. And yes, it's for 159B.
The 'file' I was asking about was the name of the recovery BIOS file. This is the only HP I have; but on the other laptops they expect the bios file to have a specific name for recovery. If that's not the case, and this laptop would accept 0159BF1C.BIN, then this thing is probably damaged rather than corrupt?
It is labelled a Envy 17 (17-2002tx), with board Rev. 159B-200 on the interior of the battery compartment.

Since your BIOS update file doesn't offer capabilty to make a USB BIOS Recovery and the one you made manually is not read by the laptop I'm thinking it is damaged/corruted beyond a recovery. Extracting and copying the files onto the usb is not gonna make any difference. Trying to boot from Windows disk and use command prompt will not go anywhere either.
With all said- you might make another attempt at reading the usb flash drive- with only the files placed on it by extracting. You mgiht make a couple copies of the .bin file- and drop the 0 on one while leaving the original too. Sometimes it does take a couple of tries.

Hi there,
First, I hope I don't come across as becoming impatient. I do apprieciate attempts to assist.
Short version:
Running the BIOS update does not result in any page where I can select the option to make a USB recovery. The HP guidance page for notebook recovery does not appear to be accurate for the 17-2002tx.
The steps outlined in the support article do not work as described. The BIOS file for the 17-2002tx laptop - when run on another Windows system - does NOT offer at any time to create a USB recovery drive.
I have copied the files extracted from the BIOS update file to the USB flash disk manually (as a FAT32 formatted drive), which includes 0159F1C.BIN etc. Then proceeded with the power on while holding Win+B. The laptop appears to make an attempt to read the USB stick for approximately 12 seconds, then proceeds back to the double-flash caps lock light. No other activity takes place.

Try making a Hardware Diagnostics 4 in 1 USB Key:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/pc-diags.html
There should be a User Guide on the flash drive after making it.
