Elitebook x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Two days ago, the fingerprint reader on my HP Elitebook x360 stops working.

The Device Manager shows that there is a problem with the "Synaptics VFS Fingerprint Sensor" :

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

Windows 10 Pro Version 1803

OS build 17134.165

Is this a hardware problem or a driver issue?

I tried to uninstall the device and scan hardware changes. The device worked for a few seconds, then the error occured again.

Thank you.

I have found the solution. The problem was not with the fingerprint reader driver. But somehow the fingerprint reader needs to be reset. I found a reset option in the BIOS "Reset fingerprint reader on next boot". I selected this option and restart the computer. The fingerprint reader now works. The success rate of fingerprint identification is much improved too. In the past, it failed once every three times. Not it is accurate almost every single time!

Mine stopped working yesterday, after I solved another issue (my brightness keys F3 and F4 stopped working). The solution I used is in this thread: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-Notebooks/Screen-brightness-keys-do-not-work/m-p/6743407#M151...

After that, I am unable to login to my HP Elitebook x360 using fingerprints. One problem after another... Please help!

I did the hardware test (BIOS level) and the system reports fingerprint reader okay.

I suspect the fingerprint driver is not compatible with the latest version of Windows 10 version 1803.

HP is slow in updating drivers.

Mine has also stopped working after the latest update.

(However, the brightness control has started again using f3 and f4)

Resuesting HP to kindly help with resolution.

My fingerprint reader has suddenly started working again... weird because I did not do anything.

Having the same issue.  where did you find the reset for the fingerprint reader in bios?  thanks

The reset is under the security settings.  However, I have tried this several times and  it is not working for me.  My fingerprint reader worked perfectly when I first got my x360.  After the first Windows update, it stopped working and I haven't been able to find a cure.
