A couple weeks ago my computer just stopped booting up to desktop. I don't recall doing anything specific, and there are not any restore dates. I NEED to backup my hard drive before I can restore my comp. I have too many important files, irreplaceable. I have WD MY PASSPORT ULTRA and a 4TB Porche Design Lacie. Only problem is, I own them but never got around tousing them to backup everything. The Lacie is brand new, and not even formatted I believe, as well as the WD. I've been going over different things with the command prompt and trying just about everything to save even the bare minimum. It keeps saying I need to format to NTFS, which I haven't been able to accomplish. I've thought I had, but got to the backup part and told otherwise. Anyone able to help me with a walk through please? Would be GREATLY appreciated by a 31 year old new student trying to take his life in a new direction!

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Jordan

Hi

I will try.....

C:\>format /?
Formats a disk for use with Windows.

FORMAT volu.................] [/Q] [/P:passes]
FORMAT volume [/Q]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:filesystem Specifies the type of the file system (FAT, FAT32, exFAT,
NTFS, UDF, ReFS).
/V:label Specifies the volume label.

C:\>xcopy /?
Copies files and directory trees.

XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/G] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]
[/K] [/N] [/O] [/X] [/Y] [/-Y] [/Z] [/B] [/J]
[/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...]

source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.

From 2016 onwards there is a possible recovery option via the cloud...
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 7 & 10)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

XCOPY the C:\Users\* area onto a ‘large’ USB stick, via the Command Prompt.

You’ll need to try various drive letters; D:..-..Z: until it’s matched - could be G; mine’s S:

C:\>XCOPY C:\Users\* S:\ /e /i /h (then thousands of files like those 3 listed below get copied over)

C:\Users\desktop.ini
C:\Users\All Users\agent.1509128044.bdinstall.bin
C:\Users\All Users\HP Deskjet 2540 series\Help\flash\zoom.swf

Then you can try System Recovery Options / Advanced Options shown in the screenshots.

OR

https://lubuntu.net/downloads/

Runs in Ram, mounts a C: and can do many more things than a W10 install disk can in respect of repair/recovery of a C:\, however the DIRTY BIT may be set on your hard Disk partition.
