HP EliteBook 655 15.6 inch G10 Notebook PC (75G66AV)

I have a laptop with a Windows system startup error with error 0xc0000098 and a problem with the BSD file,

When I tried to fix it via "Run Automatic Repair or Startup Repair" it didn't help and the system said it couldn't fix the error

I tried using "Restore BCD using Command Prompt"

bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd gave a message that it found 0 systems

bootrec.exe /fixmbr was successful

bootrec.exe /fixboot gave a message about Access denied

I also tried "Run the CHKDSK utility."

chkdsk C: /f /r /x wrote that the file system type is Raw and that the utility is unavailable

I scanned the disks via diskpart and it showed 1 disk without a name with 5000 kilobytes of free space

How to restore the system or at least extract all the files

Also note, the disk in the command line is marked as X

I created a flash drive with Ubuntu in order to boot the system from it and download all the files before further actions, but I was faced with a ban from secure startup. I disabled it, but now it asks to enter 4 digits somewhere for authorization and making changes, tell me what I'm talking about and where I should go to enter these digits. Also, if you have any ideas on how to fix the initial problem with error 0xc0000098 and a problem with the BSD file, I will be glad to receive your advice

Hi @xOverlordx,

The error code 0xc0000098 indicates a problem with the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) on your Windows system. Here are several approaches to resolve this issue:

1. Access the Recovery Environment

Since the automatic repair didn’t resolve the issue, manually entering the Advanced Options can help. To access these options:

  • Repeatedly press the F11 key immediately after turning on the laptop to access the recovery environment.

2. Manual BCD Repair

Since bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd didn’t find any systems, and /fixboot returns "Access denied," you can try the following:

  1. Run Diskpart:
    • Enter diskpart at the Command Prompt.
    • Type list disk and identify your boot disk (usually Disk 0).
    • Type select disk 0 (assuming Disk 0 is your boot disk).
    • Enter list vol to display volumes.
    • Find the volume labeled as System (EFI system partition) and note its letter. If no letter is assigned, assign one:
      • Type select vol # (replace # with the number of the EFI volume).
      • Type assign letter=G: (or any available letter).
  2. Rebuild BCD manually on EFI systems:
    • Type exit to leave Diskpart.
    • Change to the EFI partition: G: (or whichever letter you assigned).
    • Navigate to the Boot directory: cd EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
    • Rename the current BCD: ren BCD BCD.bak
    • Recreate the BCD: bcdboot C:\Windows /l en-us /s G: /f ALL

3. Permissions for Boot Sector Issues

If bootrec.exe /fixboot consistently shows "Access denied," ensure the correct drive has been accessed for repairs:

  • Try using bootsect /nt60 sys to attempt to fix the boot sector without the overhead of BCD redeployment.

4. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Ensure the drive is in a good state using diagnostic tools. HP's UEFI diagnostics can be run by pressing F2 during startup.

5. Try Safe Mode or Last Known Configuration

  • If available, access Safe Mode through the Advanced Options in the recovery environment via the F8 key or try "Last Known Good Configuration".

6. Consider Full System Recovery

If none of the manual repair options work, you may opt for a full system recovery. Ensure all necessary personal data is backed up if possible.
