Hi All
Sorted mine by deleting the HP Support Assistant file in "Control Panel" on the laptops, and then re-installing it by downloading it from the HP website. Simple really but took a lifetime to get any sense out of HP until I found a "tech" who knew what he was talking about.
hope this helps.

I uninstalled HP Support Assistant. I downloaded it again, but now I cannot reinstall it. It says it cannot find the path. I have gone back and restored the computer to the last good configuration, but nothing is working. I cannot install anything. I cannot download and install Windows updates. I cannot run the troubleshooter. These are serious problems. And, of course, this computer is out of warranty and a Windows 7 disk did not come with the computer.

Hi Babs
Really sorry to hear about your continuing problems which appear to be more than just the the BIOS update problem.
if it were me I would try to backup from a longstanding point, and if this fails to try to get to speak to an HP technician.
Easy to be wise after the event but not creating a backup system disk or memory stick ............
Let others beware and take heed!

Many problems with laptop. I've tried an earlier System Restore, but that did not resolve the issue. I tried the earliest System Restore (shows backup), but won't run backup. I've changed the system to boot in CD/DVD and tried rebooting with Repair disc and backup disks inserted, but it boots in Windows normally. I can read files on the CD, so it's not the CD/DVD player. What can I do?

Hi Babs
sorry to hear that your problem is continuing.
I have used the delet and reinstall method on five HP laptops so far and all have solved the problem.
I am not a technician, but my guess would be that the above and a backup system and recovery disc have not resolved it then the problem seems to reside somewhere other than the software, so something mechanical or electrical could be more likely.
Completely outside of my level of competence as to how to proceed now. An HP or freelance technician?
All the best.
Chris
