My HP Laptop boots-up but not going to login prompt, only shows Windows 10 background with time, wi-fi status and connected to power source icons.
I rebooted and ran diagnostic and hard disk quick test is failing with following info
Hard Drive SMART Check: PASSED
Hart Drive Short DST Check : FAILED
FAILURE ID: Q4XE7-8AWA2X-MFPX6K-60VH03
Q4XE7W-8AWA2x-MFPX6K-60VH03
Hard Drive 1 - Primary HDD Bay
I understand, this calls for HDD replacement, but is there a process to take backup of data from HDD?

Hi:
If you can still get into Windows you can back up your files.
If you can't, then most likely the data is not recoverable.
After you replace the drive, you could purchase a SATA to USB adapter cable, plug one end into the failed hard drive, and the other end into a working PC's USB port and see if you can read/copy any files from the drive to the PC.
This is what you would need for that purpose...
Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

Since you have to replace the drive, you may want to consider purchasing a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive.
After you replace the drive, with another working Windows PC, you can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.
Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

Thanks for all useful info, I'll try it out.
Do you have any suggestion on replacement hard disk?
Will this be compatible or any SATA HDD for laptop works?

You're very welcome.
The drive you selected would not work because it is only for desktop PC's.
If you want a similar replacement to what you have now, a 1 TB 2.5" notebook hard drive, this one seems to be popular.
If you can live with 500 GB of drive space, this is the kind of drive I recommend...solid state...it costs more, but is worth it.

You're very welcome.
Make a bootable USB recovery drive using the HP cloud recovery tool. Below is an info link for how to use that utility.

If that doesn't work, clean install W10 by making a bootable W10 installation flash drive using the media creation tool at the link below.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

Hello again, Paul_Tikkanen
My other laptop is Mac, so I couldn't use HP Cloud Recovery Tool.
I was able to download Windows 10 ISO from other link and copy to USB drive.
That USB drive was formatted as FAT32, so file > 4 GB couldn't be copied correctly.
I used wimtools to split source/install.wim file
wimlib-imagex split source/install.wim source/install.swm 3000
and finally was able to boot from USB drive.
Now I am running into another issue while running clean install of Windows 10 on new SSD drive.
On the screen, "Where do you want to install Windows", I select "Drive 0 Unallocated Space" and I get error
"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation".
So I restart install, and now on the screen, "Where do you want to install Windows", I see 4 partitions, Recovery, System, MSR(Reserved), and Primary.
I select Primary partition and click Next, but I get error "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the setup log files."
Any help you can provide in this issue?
I tried formatting Primary partition, but still get same issue.

Hi:
Hopefully, you made a good USB installation flash drive.
What I suggest you try next is this...
When you get to the main 'Install Now' window, use the diskpart utility to clean the disk.

Hi,
I ran diskpart.
I also ran diagnostics test on SSD disk, and it passed.
I compared checksum of ISO image files with files on USB drive, all checksum matched.
When I finally get to install, I get this error now 😞
Any help here?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with that issue.
You might want to google the error, and post on the Microsoft Windows forum and see if anyone there has any suggestions.
