My plan is to upgrade an old HP Pavilion 15 computer to a more current decade. This computer is currently running (up-to-date) Win 8.1. It has 8GB DDR_? and a 750GB HDD. This unit has Intel processors: i5-4210U CPU @ 1.70GHz (x4).
I want to upgrade to/install Win 10, replace the HDD with an SSD and max out the main memory. I also need a new battery want to replace the CMOS battery as well (since I'm already performing open heart surgery).
I have watched several how-to videos detailing the disassembly process of this physical model and it's clear that I only want to take this apart once, if possible.
Regarding the Win10 installation process, my plan was to first clone the existing Win 8.1 HDD to the SSD. Then upgrade/overwrite the SSD with Win 10. But, I also wonder if it would be better to do a fresh Win 10 install to the SSD and then manually rebuild the Pavilion 15 software.
Are the drivers, etc. for this available anywhere? They were here a few years ago but are now gone without a trace.
The exact computer model is a HP Pavilion 15t-P1 or HP Pavilion 15-p000? I never knew how to definitively determine the exact model number. I bought this computer from an acquaintance 5-6 years ago with minimal documentation/information. But it did work fine and basically still does.
Lastly, is it at all worth it or I just buy a new notebook and add this HP Pavilion to my growing stack of (old but working) obsolete notebook computers?

Regards,

Tom Q

Your biggest issue unless you have a valid W10 product key is there is no more free upgrade from W8.1 >W10.

That would add a pretty big chunk of money to your project if you don't have a W10 product key.

HP has retired support for the model series since it is more than 10 years old, which is why there are no drivers for it anymore.

You can find the drivers for your notebook from reputable 3rd party websites such as these two:

Pavilion 15-p000 and related drivers - Softpedia

HP Pavilion 15t-p000 CTO drivers

You can install 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600 memory in your notebook.

If it has a single 8 GB chip you can just buy a second one to install in the empty slot.

Timetec 8GB DDR3L / DDR3 1600MHz (DDR3L-1600) PC3L-12800 / PC3-12800(PC3L-12800S) Non-ECC Unbuffered...

I recommend the Western Digital Blue SA510 2.5" SATA SSDs in a storage capacity that meets your needs and budget.

You will need to buy a SATA to USB cable so you can clone the drive if you don't already have one.

I have zipped up and attached the service manual, below.

If you get W10 installed and you are interested in doing an in-place upgrade to W11 so you can get continued OS security updates from Microsoft, watch this video:

How to Install Windows 11 25H2 on Unsupported PCs (New Easiest Method)

I'm running W11 25H2 on my HP 350 G1 notebook that has the i3-4005U processor.

Works fine with a SSD and 16 GB of memory.
