Pavilion 14-bk070sa

This post is a warning as well as a plea for help!

I bought my Pavilion in October 2018 as my old laptop was dying and I was fed up of using it for my university work after I lost half an assignment.

The idea was that buying a good laptop would be more reliable and as I was going into my second and third years the work would be too important to lose. So I bought the Pavilion, everything was great, I really enjoyed it...

Until one day it wouldn't turn on, and there was a noticeable smell of smoke in the room. I knew I was out of my depth so I took it to a repair place. Imagine my surprise when they tell me the motherboard is fried, show me SCORCH MARKS INSIDE THE LAPTOP and there's a chance there is no fix! This was after having the laptop for just under a year and a half. I spent £400 on it and as a student that's a lot of money. I didn't leave it on and plugged in so I'm hugely concerned about the safety aspect, what if I hadn't been in the house and it had started a fire? Or what if it had been on my lap?!

To add insult to injury all of my dissertation work was on there and I hadn't physically backed it up for a couple of weeks so what they recovered was about half of my work. As a healthcare student about to go on placement in the NHS with coronavirus looming over me, this is the last thing I need!

It's out of warranty so there's no use chasing it that way, and my insurance won't cover it. Does anyone at HP have any suggestions at all as to what I can do? I can't even go back to the repair place as they're shut for lockdown. I'm tearing my hair out, I have no other device to do my work on!
