I have turned it on and get a blank screen, it then a prompt appears with "Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an error, click 'OK' to restart Computer, and then restart the installation.
I click "OK" and it appears to reboot but returns to the same prompt.
Any ideas of what I can do?

Hi @bPmisenis,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you are encountering with your HP Pavilion laptop is typically related to a failed Windows installation or a corrupted system file. To resolve this, you can try the following steps.
Use Advanced Startup Options
- Restart the laptop and during the boot-up process, press the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Select Repair your computer.
- Choose your keyboard layout and click Next.
- Select your user account and enter your password.
- In the System Recovery Options menu, choose Startup Repair.
If this does not resolve the issue, proceed to the next method.
Use System Restore
- Follow steps 1-4 from Method 1 to get to the System Recovery Options menu.
- Select System Restore.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your system to a previous state before the issue occurred.
Use Command Prompt to fix the installation
- Follow steps 1-4 from Method 1 to get to the System Recovery Options menu.
- Select Command Prompt.
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
cd C:\Windows\System32\oobe msoobe
- Close the Command Prompt window and restart your computer.
Perform a Reset
- If the above methods don't work, you may need to perform a reset.
- Turn off your laptop and then turn it back on.
- During boot-up, press the F11 key repeatedly to access the Recovery Manager.
- Choose System Recovery and follow the on-screen instructions to reset your laptop to factory settings.

Reinstall Windows
If none of the above methods work, you might need to reinstall Windows:
- Create a bootable Windows USB drive using the Windows Media Creation Tool.
- Insert the USB drive into your laptop and restart it.
- Press the appropriate key (usually F12, ESC, or F9) to access the boot menu and select the USB drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.
Before proceeding with any of these methods, ensure you have backed up any important data if possible, as some of these steps may result in data loss.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,
The info you gave me is not what I see on the screen when I press F8.
I don't see "Repair laptop", I have added the pictures of my laptop so you can see what I see. The pic with all the windows programs is what I get when I try and get the C:// promo. The is Windows Vista, I don't know if that makes a difference. I am using Windows 11 on my PC. This laptop is one my daughter found when cleaning a rental home, and I am trying to fix it for her. I am tech savvy but this has me stumped!
Let me know please,
Thank you,
Pam
