Dear Support,
I have a hp pavilion 15-ab293cl. My machine started running very slowsince half year ago and disk usage is almost always 100% in task manager. I ran the hp diagnostic tool on hard drive and it showed
Hard drive short DST check : FAILED.
FAILURE ID: 9K0FVG-8289JF-MFPX61-60R203
PRODUCT ID: T0302UA#ABA
HARD DRIVE 1 - PRIMARY HDD BAY*
So I bought a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) to replace the old HDD drive. I made a recovery media on a bootable usb drive by using hp recovery manager. But when I tried to boot from that usb drive and reset my machine to factory default I got this error : HP Recovery Manager failed. Error code = 0xEFFFFF08 when it ran almost half way through at the last step. I've tried all 3 usb ports.
I'm really struggling finding solutions online. Please help.
Thanks
Jack

Hi! @gdeng1,
The error 0xEFFFFF08 is an indication that the Master Boot Record is corrupted, but as you have a new hard drive, I believe in this case it is the recovery kit you have created should be the problem.
I recommend you to order a new copy of recovery media for your computer.
Also, try running a system diagnostics test on the PC and check if the hardware components on the PC are functioning correctly.
Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.
Try restoring the BIOS to defaults and check if it helps.
1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.
Please contact HP phone support and order a set of recovery kit for the PC.

Hi A4Apollo,
Thank you very much for your response. As you recommended, I put back my old hdd hard drive and run the diagnotic again and got the same message:
Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED
FAILURE ID: 9K0FVG-82B9JN-MFPX61-60VK03
I made the USB bootable recovery media by using HP Recovery Manager tool. It took about 30gb. At the end of making the drive, it had a test step was also successful. Do you think order a copy of recovery media would help in this case?
Thanks
Jack

Hi A4Apollo,
I've tried more things just want to let you know.
First I was trying to create another recovery media from HP media creation tool, but I got following message:
Recovery media was created on 2019-03-22. You are only allowed to create ONE set of recovery media.
So I stuck with the first one I created which is suppose to be good and working.
And then I followed this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Recovery-manager-failed/m-p/692...
tried to create a windows 10 USB flash drive installer, after it's running for a while to where it's about to finish I got following message:
There was a problem running this tool
We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on our PC. If you contiue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code: 0x80042405 - 0xA001A
Is there anything left for me to try at this point?
Thanks
Jack

Thanks for the update again.
Media creation tool is used for installing a retail copy of the operating system.
The following reasons are the cause of the error.
The USB is not of type NTFS. NTFS file systems are particularly designed for the Windows-only environment and if you want the Media Creation Tool to work flawlessly, it is best if you use an NTFS.
There is a bug in Media Creation Tool which always gives the error if it is run from another drive rather than where it is to implement its operations.
There isn’t enough space on your USB in which you are trying to create media on.
I suggest you contact HP support and order a set of recovery kit for the PC.

Hi A4Apollo,
I finally reinstalled the windows 10 successfully after search so many days for solution. The trick worked for me is when I use windows tool to make bootable USB drive, I had to format the USB drive first and then copy the windows tool (exe file) to the USB drive and ran from there. After I did that, it finished the process successfully and I have a bootable USB drive I can use the reinstall windows 10 on my new SSD hard drive. Hopefully this is useful information for other people who have the same problem as me.
Thank you so much for your response.
Thanks
Jack
