I was hoping I could get some help with direction.

My HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop died on me last month.  I took it to a repair shop and they indicated that the motherboard was fried.  I am no longer on warranty but was hoping there what a way to recover my data and possibly fix the notebook.

I was told that due to the incription on the data files, there were not recoverable by the repair shop.  This is a work computer and I absolutely need to get my data off this hard-drive.

I am in Canada and do not have an HP repair center near me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @RHaslam ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this—it must be incredibly frustrating, especially since even the store couldn’t fix it. I know how important your data is, and I want to help you explore possible solutions.

Since the PC isn’t powering on, here are a few things we can try:

External Hard Drive Adapter Recovery

When your laptop hard drive won’t boot or you can’t access it through software methods, physically removing it and connecting it to another computer can be an effective solution. This method requires careful handling but often provides direct access to your data.

Required Tools and Materials. Before beginning the physical recovery process, gather these essential items:

Hardware Tools

  • Appropriate screwdrivers
  • Anti-static wrist strap
  • SATA to USB adapter or external enclosure
  • External storage for recovered files

Optional Equipment

  • Clean, well-lit workspace
  • Small container for screws
  • Cable management supplies
  • Thermal paste (if accessing heatsink area)

Safe Hard Drive Removal Process

The removal process must be conducted carefully to avoid damage:

Preparation Steps

  • Document screw locations
  • Photograph disassembly process
  • Work on a static-free surface
  • Remove battery if applicable

Removal Procedure

  • Locate access panels
  • Remove securing screws
  • Note cable connections
  • Gently disconnect cables
  • Extract drive carefully

External Connection Setup

Once removed, the drive needs proper connection to a working system:

Connection Process

  • Attach appropriate adapter
  • Connect to working computer
  • Wait for drive recognition
  • Check Device Manager

Troubleshooting Steps

  • Try different USB ports
  • Update adapter drivers
  • Check power requirements
  • Verify adapter compatibility

If this doesn't work, the only option is to send the PC to HP for service, we can't backup data, but we can fix the motherboard issue on a fee-based support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
