Hello,

Having issue with laptop (HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15t-eb100) somehow either not recognizing its NVMe or BSODing with "DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG" both when trying to boot normally and on attempting Windows re-install. Have already tried re-loading storage drivers via USB when booting to Windows install media, the result of this is that it either BSODs or successfully loads the drivers but still does not list the NVMe.

Also tried resetting BIOS and then ran all HP hardware diagnostics according to these instructions: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Driver-PNP-WATCHDOG-on-Windows-... ...but diags reported no issues.

Already contacted HP sales and tech support. Sales advised they could not extend warranty or offer any kind of service plan following warranty's expiration. Tech support advised they could only assist with Windows issues.

This first started happening after an attempted install of Windows 11, so is this a known irresolvable problem as per here?: https://www.reddit.com/r/spectrex360/comments/y6ldab/do_not_update_to_22h2_bsod_errors_on_11th_gen/

I was very surprised to learn from HP that we have no other recourse here, so very much highly appreciate any assistance/insight.

Thanks,

R

Bumping for assistance--sorry to be annoying but I'm at a total loss on this one.

Hi @clbbcr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are getting a DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG error on your HP Spectre x360. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

The reason for DRIVER PNP WATCHDOG BSOD error could be anything from a damaged PC registry, outdated drivers, faulty hard drives, a malware attack, etc.,

Lets' try the below steps:

Crisis BIOS Recovery

  1. Turn off the computer, and then connect the power cord.
  2. Press and hold the Windows key and the B key at the same time, and then press and hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds.

Keyboard highlighting the key presses for BIOS recovery

  1. Release the Power button but continue pressing the Windows and B keys. You might hear a series of beeps.
  • If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows key and the V key. If the screen still does not display, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue. Continue to the next section to Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive.
  • If the Power light turns off, the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the Power button for only 2 to 3 seconds.
  • If a BIOS recovery message repeatedly displays, continue to the next section to Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive.
  • If a message that the computer improperly shut down or a boot problem is detected displays, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the error.
  • If Windows starts, update to the latest BIOS version. Go to HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS for more information.
The HP BIOS Update screen displays and the recovery begins automatically.

HP BIOS Update recovery in progress

Update the BIOS, & Chipset drivers:

  • Here's the link to download and install the above updates: Click here

Perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

If the issue still persists, then you may try to re-install a fresh Operating system using HP Cloud Recovery:  HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7)

NOTE: Please make sure you take a backup of all your data before re-installing the OS.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi @Anand_Andy,

I appreciate your response and thanks for helping me to look into this.

Unfortunately there is no change in the situation here after following the steps you provided for the crisis BIOS recovery. This completes successfully but then I am still unable to boot into Windows or load storage drivers to re-install Windows or etc. without BSODing.

I seem to be unable to create the USB recovery drive. Is it an issue that there are only "HP Notebook System BIOS Update" files available for this model? I've downloaded/run both F.15 Rev.A and F.11 Rev.A from here: https://support.hp.com/sg-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-spectre-x360-convertible-laptop-pc-15-eb1000/356... …and am never prompted with the HP BIOS Update and Recovery window even after attempting to run the C:\SWSetup\x\HPWINGUI.exe file that it extracts manually. It seems like there should be a "BIOS-System Firmware" file that I should be running as per here instead?: How to Restore the BIOS with a Recovery Flash Drive on HP Notebooks 2022 _ Windows 10

Unfortunately I cannot attempt the Windows Update/HP Support Assistant steps because I cannot get as far as getting into Windows.

Thanks again for your help with this.

Best,

R

@Anand_Andy provided me with the info to sign up for HP SmartFriend, where the technician we spoke with helped us to co-ordinate a repair for this machine after some additional troubleshooting in which we made a few more passes at getting the storage drivers loaded.
