Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

My daughter has an HP Stream we purchased for her in 2017ish. With schools supplying chromebooks for her work, this one has sat for sometime. Well, sure enough, it's stuck in a permanent loop. We've tried to factory reset, scan for errors, we just are stuck in a loop of Not enough room, your computer could not be reset, etc. And of course, trying to find the tech specs on the bottom of her purple stream is impossible with the gray/yellow print of specs.

Are we straight out of luck or is there anything I can do to make this thing work? Summer is here and she wants to work on graphic arts projects but this is all I have for her to use at this point =(

Hi, @MommyJenna

Back in the day, those stream notebooks came with 32 GB eMMC drives, which fill up very fast due to their extremely limited storage space.

Needless to say, HP received many complaints about installing such puny drives in the PC, that on the newer models, they upped the storage to 64 GB.

That's not a whole lot more, but it does allow you to use the notebook for a few years before the drive fills up.

Looking at your screenshot and your statement that you purchased the notebook circa 2017, it probably came with Windows 10 64 bit, not W8.1 32 bit, and should be supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool on another Windows PC running Windows 7 64 bit or newer to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with the notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will also need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

You will need to supply the product number of the notebook to use the tool, so use this guide for how to find the product number of your notebook.

If you cannot find the product number, you can also use the Microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable W10 installation flash drive and clean install W10.  Make the 64-bit installation media.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

Boot from the installation media and when you get to the part of the installation that asks, 'Where do you want to install Windows,' delete every partition on the hard drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space.

Click next and W10 will install.

Using the second method to install W10, will give you the most amount of net usable space after W10 has completed installing.

You will have to be diligent in making sure you do routine disk cleanups, and do not install a lot of programs.

Hi:

According to the product number you posted, the notebook came with Windows 10 Home 64 bit.

The notebook is also supported by the HP cloud recovery tool, so you have two options to reinstall W10...
