I understand that the HP Stream can't manage the Windows 10 upgrade, and the fixes I have seen here are beyond me.  This is my travel laptop which I use to check my emails and back up my photos, and occasioanlly do some googling.

With that in mind, am I able to continue with it as it is, and can I get rid of the message that tells me I need to upgrade?

Or do I have another piece of useless technology?

Thanks.

Hello @Dewb

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

As a workaround you can try to stop Windows Update service:

-1- if you have Windows 10 Home - set your connection to Metered one >> https://www.windowscentral.com/how-delay-windows-10-fall-creators-update-while-still-getting-securit...

-2- if you have Windows 10 Home - stop Windows automatic updates using the Registry method >> https://www.windowscentral.com/how-stop-updates-installing-automatically-windows-10

-3- Go to Start, type services.msc and start the Services app

Find Background Intelligent Transfer service, right click it, choose Properties, Set the service to Disabled

Again right click the service and ensure it is stopped

Find Windows Update service, right click it, choose Properties, Set the service to Disabled

Again right click the service and ensure it is stopped

-4- Restart the computer

-5- Run Disk Clean up to delete unnecessary temporary files and free up some space >> https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3012-open-use-disk-cleanup-windows-10-a.html

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes and if this works for you.

Hi.  Thanks for your advice.  I tried Option 3.  (I hope they were options!)  I didn't really know what I was doing, but it seems to have worked.  I have restarted my computer and I'm not getting the update message anymore.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thank you for your update.

It won't make it worse if you perform all the steps.

Enjoy ! 🙂

HP expert suggests turning off Windows Update. LOL.

Maybe HP should just bite the bullet and give free SSD upgrades, including cloning, to the CUSTOMERS they have ripped off by underspecifying their products for todays environment.

This is a RECKLESS piece of advice to give anyone, especially on a Windows OEM forum for a multitude of reasons:

  •  The builds of Windows 10 do have an EOL date and WILL stop working at some point. First the messages of expiration and then the OS will stop booting.
  •  Assuming the device continues to work, it will stop receiving security updates.

This is a poorly designed product that needs a suitable SSD to be of any value.  Not having enough space to do simple updates and upgrades is mind-boggling and customers who purchased this deserve better.

@Robot_Karate

This advice from 2-4-18 is no longer given here. I'm sure HP,Lenovo,Dell and any other OEM's who offered these had no idea from the outset of trying to make a cheap, portable device that MS would release the huge Updates and soon fill up the storage. The advice now is different since there is no way to upgrade/replace the 32GB eMMC which is soldered on the motherboard. May not be acceptable to all but many have used it.

Best option is wipe the eMMC and start fresh. The Windows 10 license key is embedded in BIOS and you can reinstall Windows 10 with the latest update included with ample space left over. You must use another machine with free space to make this installer.

Microsoft provides the free Media Creation Tool to download files and create a Windows 10 usb flash drive. At least 8gb flash drive required:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Select Download tool now, and select Run.
If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10
The Guide here will make it less intimidating.Pay attention to Step 5 since you will be using another pc:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2376-create-bootable-usb-flash-drive-install-windows-10-a.html
-------------------------------
When your usb flash is prepared insert it in usb port of the Stream.Power on the laptop and immediately start tapping Esc key. From the menu tap F9 key to boot from the flash drive- use the arrow keys to move to and select/highlight usb. Tap Enter key.
After starting the Install and you go through a couple of screens - choose Custom (not upgrade) and delete each partition (if you have more than 1) Select/highlight each and click the Delete icon. Click Next to continue with installation. It should pickup the key from BIOS but if it asks at any point just choose "I don't have a key". It will continue and should activate once you are online.

This will not include the original software from HP but most of it can be installed from your Support page.
