Hp Stream Laptop 14-ax010nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When turning on my computer then screen is black and can't get the windows to pop up.  I have done the F11 and went thru all that is there and still can't get windows to come back up.  I think my laptop has crashed.

Hello @ladybr

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

Could you confirm what happens when you press the power-on button ? HP logo appears, Windows attempts to start but it fails and screen remains blank ?  Do you see Windows login screen eventually ?

What exactly did you do with regards to F11 ? Was is successful ?

Please, perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

Looking forward to your update.

When I turn on my computer it shows the HP symbol and then it goes black screen and sits there like that.  I  did the system test and all that came back ok.  When I went to do the F11, I went to troubleshoot and try to reset this PC but it didn't work, said something was missing, then went to Advanced Option and tried the startup repair, it says couldn't repair your pc.  I have pretty much tried everything on the advanced options.

Hi @ladybr

Thank you for the updates and for following the instructions.

It's good the hardware tests passed. Considering the results (pass) and your description, I can conclude the Windows operating system fails to start. And the recovery partition (F11) has been corrupted (sometimes might happen due to some Windows updates).

In this case, you can obtain recovery media from HP (costs about 30 USD) and restore the PC to factory default settings:

  • Visit the URL
  • Choose your OS (Win 10)
  • Scroll down to "Order Recovery Media - CD/DVD/USB"
  • Expand it
  • Click "Order Media"
  • Fill in the data and follow the instructions

Once you receive this USB device, plug it in, boot from it (F9) and perform the on-screen instructions to restore your PC. Details:

After reinstalling Windows and successful recovery:

- make sure you uninstall any 3rd party antivirus/firewall security apps (McAfee?)

- update your Windows

There is one additional method (which can be ~free or slightly cheaper) but it may be slightly more difficult if you feel you may not be technically savvy. Let me know and I can post them as instructions.
