My HP Portable SSD P600 suddenly began showing up as DV Drive E and I have no idea if all my data is still on it but I was storing a lot on it (I do have a backup plan but I don't even know how to get that portable hard drive to accept the recovery and I'd prefer not to buy another). I tried to access the disc but I get an encryption form and I never encrypted it, so I don't have a password. How can I change it back and will my data be lost?  TYI!

Windows will randomly assigned a drive letter to an external drive every time you reconnect it to the PC.  It will not always be the same letter.

Is this showing up with a CD "symbol" in File Explorer?  Asking because the (E) drive is not automatically a CD/DVD drive, as I have drives showing up as (E) with no issues.

I would remove the drive and try connecting it to another PC, and it it works OK there, then do the Safely Remove process to disconnect it, do not just turn it off.

Press the Windows Key+ X key. and select Run. This will bring up the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialog box. From this dialog box you can click on the device you want to remove, and press Stop.

After that, reconnect it to your PC and see if that makes a difference.

Good Luck

Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. I had a Yoga laptop with Windows 10 so your reference to Windows + X didn't work but I did manage to find the icon for safely removed and changed the setting on the portable drive to require me to use the safely remove tool to eject and then I removed it. I plugged back into my Dell desktop with Windows 8.1and now it shows the symbol for DVD Rom and calls it a DVD Drive. I'm not sure how to proceed but I may try reformatting the disk soon while I still have time today to do that. I'm open to other suggestions. Thank you.

Well, no luck trying to reformat the disk so I guess I'll have to buy a new one (it certainly won't be an HP)!
