I was given a Split X2 13-r010dx by a friend after the 500 GB hybrid hard drive had given out. It would not boot and failed all tests. So, I have replaced the hard drive. But I see no good alternative for reinstalling the OS. My friend had not backed up the OS (does anyone do that?). Buying the restore kit from HP is very expensive to get Windows 8.1. Also it would be nice to go directly to Windows 10.
Is there a better alternative? I would prefer to install Android or Linux Ubuntu than rebuy Windows. Do you have an Linux or Android Image you can point me to?

Hi,
I googled it and found HP Split X2 13-r010dx came with preinstalled Windows 8.1 (but not sure which edition), the good news is that your notebook has activation key is stored on a motherboard so you don't need to buy another license to reinstall windows 8.1. If you already upgraded to Windows 10 then it is easier to activate using digital license.
Here is how to get it
- Download windows 8.1/ windows 10 single language iso using windows media creation tool on another PC.
- Create bootable USB using Rufus. [you can directly create bootable USB using windows media creation tool but you don't get backup iso]
- Plug in this USB into your notebook and power on the notebook.
- Follow on-screen instructions and install windows.
- Connect your notebook to the internet.
- Locate Settings>>Updae & security>>Activation.
- Try to activate windows using the digital license.
- If key mismatches or windows is failing to activate click on Go to store link.
- You will be offered a free upgrade.
- Upgrade to particular edition and try to activate windows again.

I did not need Rufus, just created bootable flash drive from the "MediaCreationTool" on download link page. It has not asked for an Activation Key. Just works. This probably saved me a week of Linux configuration headaches. Windows 10 would definitely be nice, but will forge ahead with 8.1 for now.
