@Patricksk, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If your notebook is showing a hardware disk problem and it's not being detected or installed, it could be due to a failing hard drive, loose connection, or corrupted boot sector. Let’s walk through some steps to diagnose and possibly fix the issue:

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP notebooks come with built-in diagnostics to check for hardware issues.

  1. Turn off your notebook.
  2. Press the power button, then immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Choose System Tests > Extensive Test > Run Once.

This will check your hard drive and other components. If it reports a Hard Disk SMART Check failure or Short DST failure, your drive may need replacement.

Check BIOS for Disk Detection

Sometimes the disk isn't detected due to BIOS settings.

  1. Restart your PC and press Esc > F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Go to Storage or System Configuration tab.
  3. Check if your hard drive is listed. If not, it may be disconnected or failed.

Reseat or Replace the Drive (if comfortable)

If you're comfortable opening your notebook:

  • Power off and unplug the notebook.
  • Remove the back panel and reseat the hard drive (disconnect and reconnect).
  • If the issue persists, consider replacing the drive with a new SSD or HDD.

Reinstall Windows (if drive is detected)

If the drive is detected but Windows won’t boot:

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.
