How do I know my original OS ?

Please anyone tell me why I'm seeing "Your product key is not for this version of windows". Is it because of mismatching of windows. If so how can I know my original specs of this laptop specially the OS. I have the product key taken out from the bios but don't know its for 8 or 8.1?  by the way I can't find the product specs in hp website because my product has expired.

Any suggestion is most welcome and appreciate the good work. Thanks

Download and install the free Showkey plus app from the Microsoft Store.

The report will tell you what version of W8/8.1 the product key is good for.

It will be the last line of the report and will look something like this:

This is what it tells me about the version of Windows that came with my PC.

OEM Edition: Win 8.1 RTM Professional OEM:DM

Post that line and I'll tell you what version of Windows you need to install.
