Brand new laptop.  I can't get it to stop turning off the display after 1 minute.  I should be able to lock my screen and have the PC stay connected to the display, so I can listen to audio over HDMI, but 1 minute after locking the screen, the whole HDMI signal gets shut off.  This laptop is replacing another Windows machine that did not have this problem, so I know the other components in my setup are fine.

Things I have already done:

  • In power settings set everything to not turn off for many hours
  • Set laptop lid setting to do nothing when closed
  • Set HDMI as only display, disabling the laptop screen, which is closed

Hi @Al3333,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that HDMI turns off after the lock screen, and you want to stop it.

The most relevant steps:

  • If HDMI audio/video is not behaving as expected, check Windows audio settings and set HDMI audio as the default device in Windows Control Panel > Audio/Sound properties. This can force Windows to continue sending sound to the monitor or TV over HDMI.

  • If HDMI worked and then stops due to a software conflict, restart the PC.

  • If the display behavior looks wrong, also check the display resolution/scaling settings to ensure they match the connected display.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.

I have now also followed the advice at these two sites to use the Console lock display off timeout setting, but still no luck.  Why is this machine hiding options from me and then not respecting them when I adjust the registry setting?
