HP Envy 15 EP series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I got the laptop HP ENVY Laptop 15-ep0xxx couple months ago as my workstation. Found out the sleep functionality is broken: either doesn't sleep or just reboots while trying to get in the S3 state.

I kind of triaged the issue, seems the software delivered with the laptop to control fans and power (Hp Command Center) is the reason. So if I get the software removed, the laptop can sleep with/without the power supply connected., which is the desirable functionality, but the performance is noticeable poor, about 35% down doesn't matter the power plan you set on Windows.

I need a fix for this issue, as this "creator" laptop is very unreliable if will reboot when is trying to get to sleep. Happened to me yesterday I was developing a solution and decided to prepare some coffee and forgot to set the power plan to "High Performance" which prevents the laptop to try to sleep, when I came back the laptop was rebooting, because tried to sleep. I mean this is unacceptable. Seems many people around have this very same issue and I don't understand why HP haven't fix the issue.

I have this issue as well. It has been traced back to an update to the Intel Watchdog Timer Driver after installing Windows 10 2004. I have recently made a post detailing this and requesting a fix from HP, with no reply. HP, MAKE A FIX FOR THIS ISSUE.

I have this issue as well. My hope was that the issue would be solved with the F04 bios update but nada... the laptop wakes up on its own during sleep, even with all other devices disconnected.  I solved by using hibernate rather than sleep, however such things shouldn't happen for a laptop with this price tag that is supposed to compete with the top of the line Apple products.... very disappointed in HP, why would they loose customers for such a trivial issue...

This issue still needs a resolution. I have updated all my drivers and BIOS to the latest version to no avail.

Try this as it has worked for many.

if you are in windows 10 20H1 or 20H2, maybe you have the same problem... you need to following the next steps:

  1. Go to Device Manager

  2. View --> Show Hidden Devices

  3. Find in System Devices the hardware "Intel(R) Watchdog Driver Timer"

  4. Uninstall with the option check "Delete the driver software for this device"

  5. Restart

  6. Go to Device Manager, and repeat the process until the hardware "Intel(R) Watchdog Driver Timer" has been disappeared.

Thank you but it didn't work for me. The PC wakes up on its own after a few minutes when put into standby. Removing the watchdog drivers didn't help. But thank you anyway 🙂

DO NOT REMOVE IT. The Intel Watchdog Timer Driver is a required chipset driver to maintain proper functionality of your system. There is a reason why it is hidden from you in Device Manager, and why it may reinstall itself as well. All we can do is wait on HP for a fix, and that's gonna be a long time. In the meanwhile, just disable sleep.
