Hello,

I get this "plugged in not charging message"...

Here's what I have done :

I first followed the instructions from here : https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Plugged-in-not-charging-proble...

Please perform below shown steps to resolve the issue:

Step 01. Click on the Start Button

Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager

Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left

Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall

Note: This Battery driver will get re-installed automatically when you restart the Notebook again

Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook

Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter    (My battery is not removable!)

Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute

Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter

Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

It worked. Once. Then I got the message again. This trick doesn't work anymore.

So then, I did this (same link)

After performing all the steps if you are facing the same issue still, please perform three more steps:

1. Run a Battery Check in HP Support Assistant[Install the Software if it's not available]

So the battery assistant says the battery is OK and charging (currently at 9%; but the battery icon at the bottom of my screen said 5%...) -_-

So that did not help either... Everything is up to date on my computer, so that is not the issue either... I do not have another adapter so I can't try that.

So then, I did this (from here : https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Laptop-Plugged-In-But-Not-Charg... )

Once all the drivers are updated, shut down the computer.

Wait for a minute.

Turn the computer On and keep tapping F2 repeatedly on startup to enter system diagnostics.

On the system diagnostics, select the component test and run a battery test on your computer.

This would let us know if it is a hardware or a software issue.

Now this! This tells me the battery test has failed and the battery has to be replaced... I then re-runned the Hp assistant, which tells me the battery is still OK... This laptop is not 3 years old yet, so I'm a bit surprised it has failed, or is it just that the quality isn't there anymore?

Soooo... Anything else I can do? Or I am really stuck buying a new laptop?

Thanks for your help!

You are not stuck buying a new laptop. Even non-removeable batteries can be replaced. You must take the laptop apart and remove it but it can be done.

What is the Model and Product number of your Paviliion 14. Easiest way to get that info- minimize all open windows so you can see your desktop screen. Next hold the fn key and press esc key.

Even a good laptop battery can be killed in 2 years.

Li-Ion batteries DO NOT LIKE being completely discharged and then recharged.  Also there is advice out there saying to keep your machine unplugged a lot to "exercise" the batteries because they will become "overcharged"   This is baloney.  The battery manager in the battery will show it 100% charged when the battery isn't fully charged because Li-Ion batteries don't like being completely charged.

The best way to preserve battery life is to keep the laptop on the charger all of the time except for when you need to use it in an area that there's no power then get it back on the charger as soon as you can.  Don't draw it all the way down if you can help it.  The electronics in the battery will keep the cells at top condition this way.

In many modern HP laptops the battery is well hidden but it's still replaceable without taking the thing apart.  How are you sure that yours isn't replaceable?

To PortlandiaIT; my laptop is always on the charger; i work from home and have an office, where my laptop is always placed.... I don't think it has ever been off the charger long enough to go low.
I don't know if my battery if replacable or not, but if said battery costs almost as much as a new laptop, then a new laptop would probably be better?!

To CherylG; Pressing fn +esc didn't work, but I went to Hp Support Assistant, and it says product number is M1X32UA#ABL. However, they only say I have a "pavilion 14". I have checked to see if I can replace the battery, but I haven't found anything... Maybe I'm not looking in the right place either? I guess it'll be easier to just bring it somewhere!

@Hagia

The Maintenance Manual says the battery is removeable and can use 800050-001 or 800049-001.  Check Chapter 5.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04777515

You can go to HP Parts to look for battery. Use your Product number M1X32UA -without the #ABL
http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx

Third party sellers will have it even if HP doesn't. Use 800050-001 or 800049-001 to search. Examples in US:

Hagia your battery is one of those "ultra small ultra light" ones so it isn't going to last.

All Li-Ion batteries today for laptops are built out of groups of Li-Ion cells.  Usually it is 3, 6 or 9 cells.  Each cell is 3.7v and all modern laptop batteries produce 11.1v  Some are rated 10.8 but that is because they use a different rating system they still have the same 3.7v cells in them.

In the "olden days" most laptops used 6 cell batteries and you could buy extended length batteries (that stick out the back of the laptop) that had 9 cells.

But people complained about the weight so more of them today are going to 3-cell batteries.

the problem is when you power a laptop from fewer cells they get drawn down faster and don't last as long.  I wish consumers would figure it out and demand larger batteries but they so far haven't.  Sadly, most of the cost of the battery is in the assembly and electronics thus making a 3 cell battery and a 6 cell  have not much difference in cost. So with the "lightweight" battery you save very little money and the battery doesn't last nearly as long.

Thanks for all the info PortlandiaIT! I didn't know about all this, so I think most comsumers probably don't know about it either!

@Hagia

You're very welcome. If the battery isn't available to order at HP partsurfer using the Product number of your laptop the 2 batteries listed in manual that work in your model can be used to seach online. Part  800050-001 or 800049-001 batteries are used in hundreds of models in the Pavilion 14 and 15 series so should be plentiful. I would suggest to avoid Ebay batteries.
