Some users are talking about the fan running uncontrollably on this PC model, and I’m also having the same issue.

We need an option in the UEFI to control the fan, even if we can’t set the exact RPM. At least add simple modes like High, Normal, or Quiet to adjust the fan curve.

HP PLEASE WE NEED HELP, IT'S SERIOUS PROBLEM AND THIS WILL MAKE USERS NOT COMFORTABLE

You're right -several HP EliteBook 840 G6 users have indeed reported continuous or high-speed fan behavior, especially after BIOS or firmware updates. The fan often stays at full RPM even when system temperatures are moderate, which can be distracting.

 

Why It Happens:

The 840 G6 uses dynamic fan control managed by embedded controller firmware. Fan speed is based on:

• CPU and GPU temperature sensors
• VRM and SSD thermal thresholds
• Ambient sensor readings near the keyboard

When a sensor reports an invalid or "stuck high" reading, or when firmware misinterprets it, the controller defaults to maximum cooling mode for safety. Unfortunately, the UEFI Setup on this model doesn't include user-adjustable fan curves or profiles like "Quiet" or "Performance" modes.

 

What You Can Try:

1. Update BIOS & HP System Firmware

   • Download the latest BIOS update and HP System Firmware Manager package from the HP Support page for the EliteBook 840 G6.
   • After installation, restart and enter BIOS (F10) → Advanced → Thermal Configuration → ensure "Fan Always On while on AC Power" is disabled.

2. Update HP System Manager & Power Components

   • Through HP Support Assistant, install the newest versions of:
     • HP Hotkey Support
     • HP Thermal Management Driver
     • Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (DPTF)
   • These modules coordinate temperature control between Windows and BIOS.

3. Reset BIOS Defaults

   • Press F10 at startup → Exit → Load Setup Defaults → Save and Exit.

4. Windows Power Plan Adjustment

   • In Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings, expand Processor power management.
   • Set Maximum processor state to 95–99% — this limits Turbo Boost peaks and reduces fan spikes without major performance loss.

 

About Fan Curve Control:

Unfortunately, HP business notebooks such as the 840 G6 do not offer manual fan control or predefined "Quiet/Performance" profiles in UEFI. The thermal logic is fixed for reliability and acoustic certification standards.

If HP receives sufficient feedback, a future BIOS may include more flexible fan modes, but currently the only method to influence it is through firmware updates and power-thermal drivers.

At least make HP Command Center work, that would be a big fix.

As a last resort, see if MSI Afterburner will work for you.

It doesn’t detect this PC model. Please report the issue to the UEFI developers, it should be an easy fix for them. We’re suffering from the fan noise.

Did you click on the gear symbol (upper left) and then on the "Fan" tab?

I think the fan tab is only available for non-business laptops. HP has locked everything.

Yes, from a user's point of view, I also find it unfortunate that HP cancelled out fan control...

In my opinion, HP could have easily hardcoded a minimum of, say, 25% fan speed, but still allow a custom-made fan curve.
