I have a HP laptop , for some reason it decided the charger only exists when it's powered off, battery check says the battery is fine and  I've whittled it down to the fact that the BIOs is corrupted, I made the USB drive to fix it but now it won't  recognize the charger (I've tried three different cords with three different sockets. It charges only when it's off no matter what)  so now it's soft locked since I can't fix BIOS and I can't access the desktop in any capacity  to do it the easy way 😭😭

@Hushaby3, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with a laptop that only charges when powered off and is now soft-locked due to a BIOS issue. Let's work through this step-by-step to get your system back up and running.

Perform a Hard Reset

This can sometimes resolve power and charging anomalies.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and charger, then try powering on.

Try HP BIOS Recovery

HP laptops often support BIOS recovery directly from the motherboard.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Plug in the charger (even if it doesn’t show charging).
  3. Press and hold Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  4. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until you see the BIOS recovery screen.

Use HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

If BIOS recovery doesn’t work, try booting into HP Diagnostics:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press the Esc key repeatedly while turning it on.
  3. Press F2 to enter HP Diagnostics.
  4. Run the Battery Test and AC Adapter Test to confirm hardware status.

Update BIOS via USB (if recovery screen appears)

If the BIOS recovery screen appears, insert the USB drive with the BIOS update and follow the on-screen instructions.

Make sure:

  • The USB is formatted to FAT32.
  • The BIOS file is extracted properly using the HP BIOS Update utility.

If none of the above steps work, the issue may be with the motherboard’s power delivery system or embedded controller (EC) firmware. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
