Hi @Mik1954,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're dealing with recurring issues following Windows updates, specifically with your HP 17 Laptop PC (17-cp2000 IDS Base Model). The problems include your keyboard backlight not functioning and frequent disconnections from your network. These kinds of issues, especially if they've persisted through multiple Windows versions and updates, can be frustrating.
Here's a plan of action to help address both issues:
1. Keyboard Backlight Issue
Check for Keyboard Backlight Settings:
- Press the F5 or F12 key (depending on your model) to see if it toggles the backlight on or off.
- Check the BIOS settings to ensure the backlight feature is enabled:
- Restart the laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter the BIOS.
- Look for any setting related to keyboard backlighting under "System Configuration."
- If the option is disabled in BIOS, enable it and save the changes.
Update Keyboard Drivers:
- Open Device Manager (press Windows + X, then choose Device Manager).
- Find Keyboards, right-click, and choose Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Reinstall HP Hotkey Support Software: The keyboard backlight could depend on HP's custom software for your laptop model.
- Visit HP’s support page and download the HP Hotkey Support drivers for your laptop model.
- Install them and restart your laptop to see if the issue resolves.
2. Network Disconnecting Issue
Frequent network disconnections could be related to power settings or a faulty driver.
Update Wi-Fi Drivers:
- Open Device Manager.
- Scroll to Network adapters, find your Wi-Fi adapter, and right-click it.
- Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Adjust Power Settings:
- Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and choose Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Apply the changes and restart your computer.
Network Reset:
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Scroll down and click Network reset.
- Restart your laptop after the reset and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
3. Windows Update Troubleshooting
If these issues consistently appear after Windows updates, you might want to:
- Pause Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Choose Pause updates for 7 days (this can give time to resolve issues before any further updates).
- Check Update History for Problematic Updates: Sometimes a specific update can cause issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. If you notice a specific update corresponding to when issues arise, consider uninstalling it.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
