Hi @Afola,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you forgot the administrator password for your HP 17-by-4013dx and can’t log in, here are safe, legitimate ways to recover access (or, if needed, reset the PC).

1) If you used a Microsoft account to sign in (most Windows 10 installs do), easiest / no data loss

From another device (phone/PC) open a browser and go to: https://account.microsoft.com/password/reset and follow the prompts to reset your Microsoft password.

After resetting, return to your HP and sign in with the new password. If you use a PIN, you may need to click Sign-in options → Password, then sign in with the new Microsoft password and re-create the PIN.

No reinstall needed; your files and apps remain.

2) If it’s a local Windows account (not Microsoft) and you have a password reset disk or another admin account

If you created a password reset USB in the past, plug it in at the login screen and follow Reset password.

If there is another administrator account on the laptop, sign into that account and change the forgotten account’s password in Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.

3) Use Windows Recovery Environment to reset the PC (keeps files option available), recommended if you can’t reset the Microsoft password and don’t have other admin accounts
Note: this may remove installed programs but can preserve your personal files if you choose Keep my files.

Force Windows into Recovery Environment:

Turn the laptop on; when Windows begins to load, force-shutdown (hold power) to interrupt boot. Repeat this 3 times. On the 4th boot it should enter WinRE (Recovery).

In WinRE choose Troubleshoot → Reset this PC → Keep my files. Follow prompts to reset the account password by reinstalling Windows while keeping personal files.

After reset, you’ll need to reinstall apps but your Documents/Pictures/etc. should remain (if you chose Keep my files).

If you see Advanced options → System Restore, you can try restoring to a point before you changed the password (only works if a restore point exists).

4) If BitLocker is enabled

If your disk is BitLocker-encrypted, you will need the BitLocker recovery key to access the drive after any major change. The key may be in your Microsoft account (visit account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey) or printed/saved when BitLocker was set up.

I hope this helps.
