Hi Paul: A further request: Can you recommend a guide to reinstalling Win 7 to my new disk from a bootable thumb drive. From what I have found so far the procedure seems to be machine specific.

Hi:

With your model, you should be able to:

1. Plug the flash drive into one of the PC's USB2 ports, not a USB 3 port.

2. Start the PC and tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get the menu of options.

3.  Select the F9 boot options menu, and from that menu, select the USB flash drive to boot from.

4. Hit the enter key and the PC should boot from the flash drive and W7 should begin to load the setup files.

Hi Paul: I replaced the hard drive and loaded Win 7 with no problem but I didn't back up my system wanting a clean install and assumed that I could download everything I needed to restore my laptop. Now Windows cannot locate my LAN so I have no internet access and I find that HP no longer supports my computer so no download of HP drivers is available from them. Is there any alternative to reinstalling the old drive to write a system backup? I have all of my docs, pictures, videos, etc. on a thumbnail so good there.

Hi Paul: Downloaded and installed HP drivers and am back on-line. Slowly getting things back to normal but hampered by sarellite service broadband limits; can only download large files between 0200 and 0800.  Erratic results using Internet Explorer; switched to Firefox and all is well. MS is no longer supporting Windows Live Mail so no download is available. Do you know of a source? Or have a recommended alternative? Thanks.

Hi:

It just so happens that I saved the Windows Essentials 2012 installer this past February, for some reason.

I have zipped it up and attached it below.

I don't know if it will work or not, since MS no longer supports it, but you have nothing to lose by trying it.

I do not have any suggestions for a free alternative.

I have always had some version of MS Office on my PC's, and have switched from WLM to Outlook.

I had to switch since MS quit supporting Hotmail accounts in WLM.

Currently Office 2007 and newer work with Hotmail.

Hi Paul: Was unable to install WLM from the package you sent me. I have never used Office 2010 Outlook for email but will try it. I will be downloading it over the weekend. Thanks.

Sorry that file doesn't work anymore.

Microsoft must have removed the WLE files that file contacts completely.

Hi Paul: Installed MS Office 2010 and now have email via Outlook. All is back to normal with the exception of a few minor glitches. Thanks again for your prompt and expert assistance.

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.
