Kali Installation

Hi 

I am trying to install kali linux 2016.1 on my laptop . I downloaded the iso file from the main website and burned it to a DVD also. I tried by booting the system using the uefi mode but after i select the internalCd\Dvd drive (uefi) option it just stays on a black screen doesnt change for hours .

I even tried booting in legacy mode by enableing it in the BIOS Setup and i gave the verification number to verify it also 

and i selected the option Internal CD\DVD Drive in boot option and the disc booted and i followed procedure to install and manage the partition and allocated the space of swap , boot, home  everything but even after installing the grub in the masterboot . It doesn't provide with the option to select the OS , it just boots into windows

1. In the BIOS menu of the laptop Enable Legacy mode and Disable Secure boot.

2. Then boot using the CD/DVD by pressing F9 as soon as the laptop powers up.

3. Choose Graphic Install.

4. Create 2 partitions : 1 SWAP area at least 2GB in size

                                            2 ext4 type the for " / "  system installation and then proceed

5. Then continue installation

6. When asked install the GRUB in the default option provied by the installer (i.e. MBR)

7. Finish Installation

8. To run kali press F9 to enter BOOT order menu Then select the HDD option without the "[ UEFI ]" written on its side.

9. to run kali each time follow the same (STEP 😎 by default notebook will boot up with Windows.

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

You didn't say whether you wanted Kali Linux installed in addition to Windows 8.1 (i..e, dual-boot setup), or in place of Windows 8.1.

If the former, do NOT allow the Kali installer to shrink the Windows partitions to create room -- as that will most certainly end up corrupting the Windows filesystem, rendering it unbootable, and really HARD to fix -- as there are no windows filesystem repair tools that work in Linux.

If the latter, if the Kali installer does not give you the option of removing all the partitions on tha laptop, you will need to boot from a Linux partitioning tool to do that.  My recommendation is the GpartedLive tool -- which you can download and burn to a CD or write to a USB stick.

**** A very important step is to create an unpartitioned space in which you'll install kali using Windows drive manager or using linux terminal commands.
