My keyboard has stopped working but it’s only the letters, all else is fine

Let’s walk through a few targeted steps to help bring your keyboard back to life. ⌨️🧩

 

 

Quick Fixes to Try First

  • Check and Disable Numlock
    Press the Num Lock key (sometimes Fn + Num Lock) to toggle it off.
    On some HP laptops, there may be a Num Lock light near the power button or on the key itself—off = good for typing.
    Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and disable any settings that force numeric input or toggle keys.
  • Restart your computer: Sometimes a simple reboot clears up temporary input bugs.
  • Try an external keyboard: If it works, the issue is likely with your built-in keyboard or its driver.

1. Check Filter Keys

Windows has a setting that can block rapid or light keypresses:

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
  • Turn Filter Keys off

 

2. Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
  • Run the Keyboard troubleshooter and follow the prompts

 

3. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  • Press Win + X > Device Manager
  • Expand Keyboards
  • Right-click your keyboard > Uninstall device
  • Restart your PC to reinstall the driver automatically

 

4. Try the On-Screen Keyboard

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
  • Toggle on On-screen keyboard to test if letters respond there

 

Advanced Checks

  • Boot into BIOS: Restart and press F10 or Esc repeatedly. If letters work in BIOS, it’s a Windows issue.
  • Check for recent updates: If the issue started after a Windows update, consider rolling back the keyboard driver:
    • Device Manager > Keyboard > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver
