Hi,
Every once in a while all of a sudden my keyboard keys don't work properly. I am unable to type and when I open a browser when I try to type every key opens a shortcut instead. Certain keys like the windows button doesn't do anything at all like open the start menu like it usually does when I open it. What could be causing this?

Hi @jacquelynm
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your keyboard is intermittently switching into a different input mode, possibly due to a stuck modifier key or a software issue. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:
Check for Stuck Keys
- Press Shift, Ctrl, and Alt keys one at a time to see if any are stuck.
- Try tapping the Windows key multiple times to see if it starts responding.
Disable Sticky Keys & Filter Keys
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
- Ensure Sticky Keys and Filter Keys are turned off.
Restart Your Laptop
- A simple restart can reset the keyboard’s behavior.
- If the issue persists, try booting into Safe Mode (Shift + Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart → Select Safe Mode).
Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers
- Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
- Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard, and select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- If updating doesn’t work, try Uninstall device, then restart your laptop to reinstall the driver.
Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Keyboard troubleshooter to detect and fix issues.
Check for External Devices Interference
- If you have an external keyboard or USB device connected, unplug it and test again.
- Some peripherals can interfere with keyboard input.
