Some characters on keyboard are swapped around - eg “ and @. I’ve tried the function/numberlock but still same.

It sounds like you have the wrong keyboard layout set - ie Uk keyboard layout for a US keyboard.

 

If you have more than one keyboard layout set in Windows 10, you can toggle between them by holding down the Ctrl Key and pressing the Shift key

 

Alternatively, you can change the layout for your keyboard as described on the relevant link below.

 

Change Keyboard Layout - Windows 8 & 10

thansk david - ctrl shift didn't do it and there was no language setting on the control panel - but found it under Region - amended all to UK and reset and all good now. any ideas why it changed to that setting by itself?
