Here I have a HP Pavillion 15-p189sa. When I shut down the PC, Windows shuts down correctly as it should but the hardware does not turn off and the power light remains lit. This is especially frustrating when running on battery as it will drain the battery until it is flat if I do not remember to hold the button and force it off. This same problem also happens if Windows goes into sleep mode after 15 minutes or so, often it will not wake from sleep and will require a forced reboot.
I have tried:
- Installed all available updates for Windows 10 Professional x64
- Installed the latest available drivers from HP for this model of laptop
- Updated to the latest available BIOS for this model, version F.53 Rev A
- Reinstalled Windows 10 from genuine Microsoft-supplied media
- Tried the MEI driver solution offered here, which did not work: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Power-button-wont-turn-off/td-p...
To summarise:
- After shutdown, power light remains lit
- When sleeping, it will not wake again
It makes me think it is a hardware issue because it happens on shutdown, but equally it could be software because it happens during sleep as well. Can anyone suggest a solution?

I have now managed to resolve this issue myself by disabling Fast Startup in the Windows power settings. So far I have successfully been able to shut down the laptop 4 times, I will see if that has fixed the sleep issue later on.

Hi:
Glad you were able to fix it that way, but you would need to try this much newer version of the IMEI driver in order to resolve the shut down issue with fast boot enabled...
This package provides the Intel Management Engine Components Driver for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

I can't guarantee it will work for you, but it has worked for others with the same Intel 4th gen platforms.

Thanks Paul for your response.
I spoke too soon with my last response, when I came to shut it down at the end of the day sadly it wasm't fixed, but at least it's now intermittent rather than every time so it's a step in the right direction.
I will try the driver you have suggested when I am back in front of the laptop (it's a work one, I'll be back there on Monday now)

Hi
In addition to the excellent answer from Paul, I used to have Shutdown problems on HP and NON HP W10 installs.
What sems to work in all cases is creating a Shutdown Shortcut, or using WinKey + R and typing something from options list like this...
Usage: shutdown.exe [/i | /l | /s | /r | /g | /a | /p | /h | /e | /o] [/hybrid] [/soft] [/fw] [/f]
c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /s /f /t 10
