AFter a windows 11 update in September 2024 I lost access to my laptop keyboard and any other USB or wireless keyboard. The USB ports were working and could detect a usb and wireless mouse and usb disk storage. My on board touch mouse pad continued to work.
I installed a repair version of windows 11 and got back my usb and wireless keyboards but not my laptop keyboard.
I have tried all the recommended actions in device manager and via HP tools.
But windows 11 will not detect the onboard Keyboard
The laptop keyboard works when in BIOS and all keys are detected. but not in windows 11 mode.
I can find no reference to a specific driver for the onboard keyboard when I access the HP drivers for my computer. I have spent countless hours trying to resolve this problem. Can somebody help.
what is the driver name for keyboard thanks Jeff

Hi @Jeff_Teralba_AU,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with keyboard issues after a Windows update. Since your laptop keyboard works in BIOS but not in Windows 11, it's likely a driver or software issue. Here are some steps you can take to resolve it:
1. Check Device Manager
- Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select it).
- Look under Keyboards for any entries related to your onboard keyboard. If you see an entry with a yellow exclamation mark, right-click on it and select Update driver.
- If there is no entry for your keyboard, try these steps:
- Click on View in the menu and select Show hidden devices to see if the keyboard appears.
2. Uninstall and Reinstall Keyboard Drivers
- In Device Manager, right-click on your keyboard (if it appears) and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver upon reboot.
3. Check for Windows Updates
- Sometimes, subsequent updates fix issues introduced in earlier updates:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates.
4. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Keyboard and run the troubleshooter to identify and fix problems.
5. Restore Previous Driver
- If you recently updated your drivers, you can try rolling back to the previous version:
- In Device Manager, right-click on the keyboard device and select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
6. Install HP Support Assistant
- Download and install the HP Support Assistant from the HP website. This tool can automatically detect and install the latest drivers for your hardware, including the keyboard.
7. Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts
- Some third-party software may interfere with hardware functionality. If you have any keyboard-related software (like keyboard remapping or gaming software), try uninstalling it.
8. Driver Names for HP Laptops
- Generally, the onboard keyboard driver is classified under HID Keyboard Device in Device Manager.
- You might not find a specific driver name listed for HP keyboards, as they typically use generic Microsoft drivers.
9. Restore or Reset Windows
- If none of the above solutions work, consider restoring your system to a point before the update or performing a reset:
- Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC. Choose the option to keep your files if you don’t want a full wipe.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
