Hi @coolpg,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for providing the complete model information. I understand how frustrating it is to reset the laptop and then find that the Microsoft Office Home & Student license that came with the PC is no longer activated.
The important point is that the Office license is generally not recovered by checking the HP serial number. For Office that came preinstalled with an HP PC, Microsoft associates the license with the Microsoft account used when Office was originally activated. Microsoft confirms that once the Office offer is activated and linked to the Microsoft account, that account is used to reinstall Office later.
Recover and reinstall Office
- Go to the Microsoft account | Sign In or Create Your Account Today – Microsoft.
- Sign in using the same Microsoft account that was used to activate Office when the laptop was first set up.
- Check Services & subscriptions to see whether Office Home & Student is listed.
- If it is listed, select the Office product and choose the option to Install.
- Install Office on your HP Pavilion Gaming laptop.
- Open Word or Excel and sign in with the same Microsoft account to complete activation.
Microsoft specifically recommends using the same account originally associated with Office when reinstalling a preinstalled Office product.
If Office is not listed
If Office Home & Student does not appear under your Microsoft account, please don't purchase Office again yet.
If you have the original purchase documentation, Microsoft account information, or any Office activation/product-key information that came with the laptop, keep those available. A digital Office license included with a new PC may not have a printed product key; Microsoft states that some new-device Office offers use a digital product key that is transmitted to the PC and activated by signing in with a Microsoft account.
You can also use Microsoft's Office activation support if the license was previously activated but is not appearing in your account.
From HP's side, the HP Pavilion Gaming 15-dk0272tx hardware itself does not need to be replaced because of this issue. The reset removed the installed Office software/activation state; the first thing to establish is which Microsoft account holds the original Office entitlement.
If you still cannot locate the license after signing in with the original Microsoft account, let me know what Office Home & Student version was originally included (for example, Office 2019 or Office 2021) and what you see under Services & subscriptions. We can then determine the appropriate next step without risking another purchase.
Take care and have an amazing day!
I'm an HP Employee.
