My laptop is making loud buzzing, grinding noises intermittently. I know my battery is going ... is it safe to keep the laptop on?

Hi @MoniqueW1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Identify the Source:

  • Fan Issues: The most common source of grinding noises in laptops is the cooling fan. Dust buildup or a faulty fan bearing can cause intermittent noises.
  • Hard Drive: If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive (HDD), grinding noises could indicate a failing drive. Backup important data immediately.

Check the Battery:

  • While battery issues often manifest differently (e.g., reduced performance, overheating), it's prudent to monitor battery health. If it’s swelling, replace it as soon as possible.

Perform a Visual Inspection:

  • Turn off your laptop, unplug it, and carefully inspect the vents for dust or obstructions. Use compressed air to clean the fan area, but avoid opening the laptop unless you are comfortable with hardware.

Monitor Temperatures:

  • Use software tools like HWMonitor to check if your laptop is overheating, which can cause fans to run loudly.

Run Diagnostics:

  • Use HP Support Assistant or enter BIOS/UEFI to run hardware diagnostics. These tools can help identify failing components like the fan or hard drive.

External Factors:

  • Ensure there are no external objects obstructing ventilation, such as papers or cloth.

I hope this helps.
