Hello @Tjones77
Welcome to the HP Support forum.
How often did this happen ? When did it start ?
** If your PC shuts off with a warning from Windows (some message on screen), then this is software issue and is connected to Windows (e.g. Windows Update) , some 3rd party software (good or bad).
** If the PC shuts down without any warning, it could be hardware issue.
Please, check this article for reasons for the PC to turn off unexpectedly - could be motherboard, battery, overheating, etc....
>> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01657439
Follow the instructions in the articles. Also download and run the free Speccy to check the hardware's temperature > http://www.piriform.com/speccy
Please, perform some basic hardware checks
1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button
2. Power it on.
2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).
This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one
3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.
This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1
If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check.
If there is a Component tests, you may also test the Motherboard and battery
Let me know the test results.
Please, let me know the results from Speccy (temp), how is your battery performing and provide an update.

I did the system quick test and it says everything passed. It started doing this just a couple weeks ago. A bit ago when I picked it up to use it it shut off. Then after I restarted it and was going into what I needed to it shut off. Very frustrating as I have only had it a year.
Thank you.

You are welcome!
OK, did you check the temperatures using Speccy - you may keep it running as long as it is needed for ~ real-time monitoring.
It shuts down just like this without any warning - immediately just like that ?
Did you check the articles posted above ?

Please, review this HP official article about such issues you experience now. Follow the appropriate steps that fit your case to attempt to fix the issue:
and

If you did try everything but nothing helped, I am afraid you will need to bring your computer (or ship it) to service - HP Authorized service center. If the computer is still under warranty, you will need to notify HP support first. If you are not sure where such a center is located, please contact HP support for assistance in finding one. * Finally SOLVED* for me...
Hey, I Had this SAME issue and it was Very frustrating! I tried almost Everything, i even almost took the whole computer appart. After days of trying to figure it out i FINALLY found the issue. I had a very small short inside my power cord. It was a little arcing inside the cord just enough to shut off the computer but not enough to apper to lose the connection. I was confused becuse i could see the lap top WAS getting power but i didnt notice the arcing dissconnected and reconnected the power really fast. The cord light flickering off and on was too fast for the eyes. After i fixed the power cord it stopped shutting off randomly.
I know this post is old but i took the time to comment because i looked everywhere for ANY solution and couldnt find one so hopfully this will help SOMEbody with a similar issue. Also, idk if this solves your problem but hopefully you figure it out.
