@Ginne1, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing an issue where your HP Pavilion laptop's battery percentage doesn't decrease when unplugged and eventually shuts down unexpectedly. This can be frustrating, but I’ll guide you through some steps to help resolve it.
Perform a Battery Test Using HP Hardware Diagnostics
HP provides a built-in tool to check your battery's health.
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press the Power button and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select Component Tests > Power > Battery.
- Run the test and note the results.
Update BIOS and Drivers
Outdated BIOS or battery drivers can cause incorrect battery readings.
- Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter your laptop model (e.g., HP Pavilion 15-xxxx).
- Download and install the latest BIOS, Chipset, and Battery Management drivers.
Calibrate the Battery
Battery calibration helps the system accurately detect battery levels.
- Charge the battery to 100%.
- Disconnect the charger and let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts down.
- Recharge it to 100% without interruption.
- Restart the laptop and check if the battery percentage updates correctly.

Reset the Embedded Controller (EC)
This can fix battery reporting issues.
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the charger.
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the charger and power on the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
